PROVO, Utah – BYU tied 2-2 in their second Big 12 matchup of the season. The Cougars faced off against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. 

Mika Krommehoek got the Cougars started by striking the first goal of her career in the fourth minute. After the hot start, BYU was unable to capitalize again until much later in the second half.

“It was great how we came out firing and got a nice goal in the assist zone but we didn’t do that again the rest of the half and made it harder on ourselves than it needed to be,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood.

BYU went back and forth allowing two goals and falling behind 2-1. They fought back quickly and tied it up at 2-2. The game ended in a 2-2 tie. BYU outshot the Cowgirls 22-10 and 6-3 with shots on goal.

First Half

The Cougars got off to a fast start with the first shot of the game from Mika Krommenhoek in the second minute. She was blocked on the first attempt, but came back quickly as she got her foot on a pass from Presley Freeman for her first collegiate goal in the fourth minute. This is the fastest the Cougars have scored in a match this season.

Following the goal, the Cougars had another opportunity with a shot coming from Allie Fryer in the ninth minute. The Cowgirls countered with an attempt of their own, sailing it high over the crossbar. 

Momentum went back and forth between the teams for the next 15 minutes. 

The Cowgirls had their first corner of the match in the 31st minute, which found the head of Xcaret Pineda for the equalizer.

BYU countered with a a few shots in the next couple of minutes from Freeman and Mackenzee Vance, unable to convert for a goal. 

Neither team was able to score again as they went into half tied 1-1. The Cougars outshot the Cowgirls 9-4, with three being on target.

Second Half

As the second half began, BYU’s Emma Hamberlin got a shot off in the 46th minute.

In the minutes that followed there was a lot of back and forth between the two teams. OSU’s Logan Heausler nearly scored after stealing the ball in the front field and missing off the post.

BYU then had its first look of the half with a corner in the 56th minute and were able to get it to Fryer who missed off the left side.

BYU was able to hold the attack for 15 minutes resulting in many shots and no goals. OSU then won the ball and was able to advance it downfield. Nicole Ray found the goal in the 73rd minute to bring the game to 2-1 for the Cowgirls.

Soon after, BYU had a corner kick in the 75th minute and Vance was able to get a shoulder on it after some ricocheting and scored to tie the game, 2-2.

OSU had a few good looks at the goal in the last minutes but the Cougars were able to deny them. BYU ended the game on a corner kick that was won by the Cowgirls and cleared to end it.

The game ended with a 2-2 tie as each team found one goal in both halves.

The Cougars will stay here in Provo for their next Big 12 matchup against the Iowa State Cyclones on Monday, Sept. 30. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
