Wyoming Game Week—BYU Media Availability

Opening Statement
“New week. We are super excited to be 2-0 going into week three. After watching the film, I am really proud of the team. Like I said after the game, there is still a lot of room for improvement, so we look forward to getting after it today.”

On Wyoming
“We are looking forward to this matchup with Wyoming on the road this week. Knowing the history of this rivalry, I know they have a passionate fanbase that loves the team, and I know they’re looking forward to this game, too. They are a really well coached team with tough kids and a great culture.”

“We try to do things the right way and always respect our opponent. Every week is a different week, you never know what’s going to happen, but that’s the game of football. This is an old-time rival of ours, so I know there are a lot of fans wanting to see Wyoming come out on top, so we will go out there and perform better than we have been. We still haven’t played our best football yet, and I don’t think our identity has shown up in all three phases, so this is a good week for it to show up.”

On Running Back Enoch Nawahine
“Enoch did a great job with nis vision and ability to run the football. For a guy who didn’t get that many reps in practice to function at a high-level is great and he made some really big plays for us. Both him and Miles Davis did great, so we know we can count on those guys.”

On the Offensive Line
“We would like to see things be a little more explosive than they have, but we know it’s not a lack of talent. We have tons of talent and ability, and this week will be a good opportunity for some of our young guys to make some big plays. The O-line is doing a great job, so I would like to take better advantage of that.”

On Ball Security
“It comes down to taking care of the football. I don’t want guys to have to play tight and not take chances, but we have to do a better job protecting the ball. The football doesn’t just belong to one guy. It belongs to the fans, the team and the program, so the guys need to start thinking about it more like that. Our offense needs to take care of the football.”
On his open Saturday
“I picked my wife up from the airport because she went down to Dallas for our game at SMU and got in on Saturday morning. Then I spent most of the day watching college football. There’s no better feeling on the plane ride home after a win than realizing you can watch football all day Saturday. I thought our conference represented really well on Saturday, so it was fun to watch all those games.”

On his overall takeaways from the first week of CFB
“I think it was really motivating to see some of the big upsets and see these underdogs winning or playing in close games, especially given our position in the Big 12 being seen as an underdog. So now we just need to go out every week and make a statement.”

On the defensive performance on Saturday
“I think what it comes down to for us is really trusting and believing in our system and believing in our defense. The way it’s designed is that if everyone does their job and executes their assignment, we are always going to be sound no matter what kind of play we see. Everyone doing their one-11th goes a long way. I think Friday’s game was eye-opening for a lot of our guys because they realized that if everyone does their job, we’re a dang good defense who can play with anyone. We were put in some tight spots in that game but we didn’t fold, and we trusted the calls and executed well. I think it gave us a lot of confidence going into the next few games.”

On the Wyoming rivalry
“Growing up a huge BYU fan and having my dad talk about the history between us and Wyoming, I know how important this game is for both programs. I do understand that going up there, it will be a hostile environment and it’s a huge game for both of us, so we are excited to be up there in that atmosphere and put our product on the field.”
On having an extra day this week
“Having an extra day is awesome. I personally like an extra day. Last game was a head beater, we were bashing heads in the trenches, so having more time to recover and get our bodies back is nice. It's also nice having that extra day to watch film and study.”

On defensive performance
“I think we’ve made some great statements. I don’t think we’ve played our best game yet. We definitely have a lot more we need to prove but I think our defense is playing great. I think we’re playing fast and physically and I think we’re having fun.”

“Defensively, it wasn't a surprise for us to come out and play like that. Honestly I can’t wait until the fans notice that that’s the defense we are and the defense we strive to be everyday in practice."

On his effectiveness this year
“Just getting comfortable in the scheme and really getting to know all my brothers around me, knowing who’s playing behind me and who’s playing in front of me. We did quite a bit of team bonding this off season and that’s huge. Team chemistry is a huge part of the game but also just getting comfortable in the scheme.”

On teammates Jack Kelly and Isaiah Glasker
“I love playing next to those guys. They’re always striving to create havoc in the backfield or wherever they are. They are always trying to make a play.”

On confidence in the linebacker unit
“We’re super confident playing with each other. It’s a lot of fun playing with Jack and Isaiah. I’ve known them all throughout growing up. I used to workout with Jack and did 7-on-7 with Isaiah. Being confident in the guy next to you is huge.”

On Wyoming rivalry
“I think all the players know that this game goes way back. It’s the third most played game in BYU’s history. We know that Wyoming is a hostile environment. We know what their fans are about. We know what their team is about. We’re ready for them to give us our best shot."
On being a key part of offense early on
“I think just being in the right place at the right time and having trust in ARod, Coach Gilride, and Jake (Retzlaff) being able to evolve in this offense. It could have easily been anybody else so I’m grateful for the chance to be out there and make a play when the ball comes to me.”

On non-game Saturdays
“It definitely creates an expedited week. The amount of focus and level of intensity in all aspects of recovery, game film, and practices are at an all-time high. Being cognitive of that is the biggest thing.”

On addressing ball security
“More than anything ball security is not a passive thing. It’s something you always have to be aware of and has to be the most important thing in the game. I think one way we can do it is in practice, whenever you see a teammate or yourself not having good ball security to yell it out or to be aware enough to fix it, and then obviously watching it back on film and seeing how it affects the game.”

On game scheme for tight ends
“I think we all know that we all have roles to play and as you’ve seen the past couple weeks, we play a lot with two, three, even four tight ends. Just having enough bodies to fill those roles in case anybody goes down is definitely a useful thing for us. There are so many different bodies in the tight end room that we can have an advantage over teams.”
