PROVO, Utah — The BYU women’s soccer team earned a season-high in goals with a 3-1 win over conference opponent Iowa State on Monday evening at South Field, moving on to a 5-4-3 overall record.

"I am proud of the girls tonight," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "They battled through and it wasn't easy. It was a very physical game, but we came up with two really nice goals in the second half."

After a 1-1 tie at halftime, BYU would score two game-altering goals in the second half to secure its victory.

BYU’s leading goalscorer Allie Fryer earned her sixth goal on the season, scoring the first goal of the match in the 21st minute mark. Avery Frischknecht tallied the second goal in the 69th minute, her second of the season. Junior MacKenzee Vance recorded the third and final goal for the Cougars in the 75th minute.

Freshman Mika Krommenhoek earned two assists on BYU’s three goals, her first game with multiple assists.

The Cougars outshot the Cyclones 16-7 in Iowa State's first appearance in Provo. In a physical matchup, six yellow cards were issued, three to each team, and a combined 33 fouls were called, with 17 on BYU and 16 on Iowa State.

First Half

BYU’s freshman Presley Freeman took the first shot of the evening from either side at the seven minute mark, firing it right at the hands of ISU’s goalkeeper.

The Cougars dominated possession for the first 20 minutes and tallied five corner kicks while holding the Cyclones to zero shots. BYU’s offense remained persistent and eventually found success in the 21st minute when Krommenhoek sent the ball over to Fryer who used her right foot to find the bottom-left of the goal, earning the 1-0 edge over Iowa State.

It was Krommenhoek’s first career assist, her second consecutive game with at least one point.

With ten minutes left in the first half, the Cyclones had yet to record a shot.

Erin Bailey entered the match off the bench and fired off a shot late in the 36th minute, BYU's sixth shot of the evening, and ISU’s goalkeeper would earn her second save.

ISU’s Lauren McConnell evened the score six minutes later off of the team’s second shot of the night, taking the score to 1-1 with three minutes remaining in the half.

The score remained tied at 1-1 through the first 45 minutes, with BYU outshooting the Cyclones seven to two.

Second Half

Within the first ten minutes of the second half, the Cougars caught glimpses of a second goal from multiple close opportunities.

A header from Frischknecht bounced just over the crossbar, landing on top of the net two minutes in from a BYU corner kick. A handball was later called on Fryer in the 54th minute, despite the ball reaching the back of the net. Then, Addie Gardner sent BYU’s eighth shot towards the net just nearly over the crossbar at the 58 minute mark.

As the score was still tied with 24 minutes left, both teams turned on the aggression and three yellow cards were issued, with two on BYU. The second half would go on to see six yellow cards, with zero appearing in the first half.

Two shots-on-goal occurred coast-to-coast in the 68th minute, with attempts from Iowa State’s Magdalena Keck and BYU’s Krommenhoek, both ricocheting off the crossbar.

A fourth yellow card from the referee was issued to Iowa State at minute mark 69, causing a BYU free kick. Ella Rustand delivered the ball to Frischknecht who got her head on the ball and found the bottom of the net, giving BYU the 2-1 lead.

BYU would pile on a third goal in the 75th minute by Vance off an assist from Krommenhoek for a tide-turning 3-1 lead.

With seven minutes left, BYU’s goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez earned her third save of the night off a late shot from Iowa State.

BYU’s defense held off the last few Iowa State chances to secure the 3-1 victory over the Cyclones.
