MONTEREY, Calif. – Men’s golf holds a one-shot lead after day one of the Leadership and Golf Collegiate at Bayonet Golf Course on Monday.

The Cougars shot a 7-under 281 on Monday, earning a one-shot lead over second-place Sam Houston and a two-shot lead over third-place Pacific. BYU made 18 birdies on the day, the third-most of any team.

With the help of a 5-under 67, junior Simon Kwon leads BYU and sits in solo second place. Kwon carded an eagle on the par-5 10th, along with three birdies to vault him into the top three.

Peter Kim carded a bogey-free round, landing him the fourth place after 18 holes. He shot a 3-under 69 and is looking to continue his strong play over the next two days.

Senior Cole Ponich sits in a tie for 14th after he shot a 1-under 71. Tyson Shelley is tied for 34th after making the third-most birdies (5) of any player in the field en route to a 2-over 74.

Zac Jones and Kevin Wu are both competing as individuals this week in California. Jones is tied for 47th after a 3-over opening round with Wu in a tie for 75th after shooting a 7-over 79.
