NEW ORLEANS — The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, today a named BYU junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff one of its eight quarterback Stars of the Week for his performance in leading BYU to a 38-35 win over Oklahoma State on Friday.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only national quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances as part of the balloting.
Trailing by four points with 1:13 to play in the game, Retzlaff directed a 75-yard drive that including a first-down pass on fourth-and-7 and a 27-yard scramble that set up the 35-yard winning touchdown pass to Darius Lassiter with just 11 seconds left on the clock.
Retzlaff competed 13 of 26 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns against OSU. He also had nine carries for 81 yard and another score.
On the season, Retzlaff has competed 121 of 205 passes for 1,644 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is also the Cougars leading rusher through seven games with 49 carries for 265 yards and two additional scores.
The Manning Award selected 29 quarterbacks for its preseason watch list but additional quarterbacks are typically added as the season progresses. Finalists will be selected in early December and the winner is scheduled to be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
