HOCKLEY, Texas – The Cougars took home the Big 12 Match Play title at Houston Oaks Country Club after beating No. 13 Baylor 4-1 in the championship match.
“This win means everything to me,” Simon Kwon said. “This team is capable of anything. Going out this week and proving to everyone that we can compete with the best teams is exactly what we need for the rest of the season.”
Prior to today’s championship match, BYU remained the only undefeated team in match play. They kept this streak after they took down their final opponent, No. 13 seed Baylor.
Staying unbeaten, junior Tyson Shelley won all five matches he played in this week. Shelley finished today’s matchup against Davis Ovard at 4 and 3 to help solidify the BYU win.
Kwon, who takes home a 4-1 record on the week, never trailed in his match against Drew Wrightson, who he beat 2 and 1. Senior Cole Ponich won his match 3 and 2 over Baylor's Vincent Stjernfeldt. Peter Kim took down Zach Heffernan 2 up, while Angus Klintworth fell to Jonas Appel, 1 down.
"I am so impressed with each one of the guys on the team," head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "So many great shots right when we needed them to win. Great win for our team."
After a short break, BYU will compete in its final tournament of the 2024 calendar year from Oct. 21-23 in the Leadership and Golf Collegiate in Monterey, California at Bayonet Golf Club.
