IRVING, Texas — BYU freshman Delaney Gibb was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week after leading all conference freshmen in scoring, assists, three-point field goals and blocks during the season's opening week.
The Cougar floor general averaged 19.5 points on 55 percent shooting going 50 percent from behind the arc and 81.3 percent from the charity stripe in two games last week. Her 19.5 points ranked 6th-most among freshmen nationally. Gibb also recorded 5.5 assists with a nearly 2:1 assist-to-turnover along with 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and a block per game.
“Delaney is a special player," said head coach Amber Whiting. "She is incredibly mature for how young she is and her basketball IQ is through the roof. Delaney is a three-level scorer who can exploit deficiencies in the defense, sees the floor super well and is a pest on the defensive end. Delaney has a great understanding of what the team needs from her and how to accomplish it."
In the Cougars' second-half comeback over Wyoming, the Raymond, Alberta native scored or assisted on 31 of BYU's 51 points. In the third quarter, BYU outscored the Cowgirls 31-6 with Gibb scoring five points on 50-percent shooting, dishing four assists and recording a rebound and a steal.
With Wyoming drawing within seven in the fourth, the true freshman went on a personal 8-0 run over 1:07 to extend the Cougar lead to 15 with 4:53 to play. She later iced the game, going 4-for-4 from the line to move BYU to 2-0 on the young season.
Gibb and the Cougars are back on the floor on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. MT for the annual Kid's game as the Colorado State Rams visit the Marriott Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast live on BYU Radio, byuradio.org and the BYU Radio App with Jason Shepherd on the call.
