IRVING, Texas — BYU safety Talan Alfrey was named the Big 12 Special Teams Co-Player of the Week today for his performance in the BYU's 30-18 win over Houston on Saturday.
With BYU trailing 7-0 late in the first quarter, Alfrey returned a Houston onside kickoff attempt 58-yards for a BYU touchdown to tie the game.
The 6-2, 205-pound junior from Auburn, Washington, also had a solo tackle in BYU's win over Houston. Alfrey’s kickoff return for a touchdown, combined with two previous kickoff touchdowns by Keelan Marion, ties the BYU single-season team record set back in 1961.
A co-captain and football representative on the BYU Student Athlete Advisory Council, Alfrey has played in 28 games with 11 starts during his three seasons at BYU. He has played in 11 games with nine tackles during the 2024 season.
Alfrey joins kicker Will Ferrin and punt returner Parker Kingston as the third Cougar to received Big 12 Player of the Week honors during the 2024 season.
