Swim and Dive opens dual meet at Arizona

BYU men’s and women’s swim and dive returned to the pool in its first action since late November with a dual meet at Big 12 foe Arizona on Friday.

TUCSON, Ariz. — BYU men’s and women’s swim and dive returned to the pool in its first action since late November with a dual meet at Big 12 foe Arizona on Friday.

Men’s Recap

Tanner Nelson, Darwin Anderson, Max Kleinman, Nathaniel Eliason and Ezra Purcell gave BYU men’s swim and dive its top finishes on day one in Tucson.

Nelson finished second in the 200 individual medley at 1:47.51, 1.56 seconds ahead of Arizona’s Bryan Wong and behind only nationally-ranked Wildcat Haakon Naughton.

Anderson and Nelson took second and third, respectively, in the 1650 free. Anderson’s runner-up spot came in 15:39.69 while Nelson finished in 15:51.33.

Kleinman clocked a collegiate-best 54.11 in the 100 breast to finish third. At 54.11, the freshman from Mesa, Arizona also debuted on the program’s top 10 board at No. 9 all-time. Eliason led the Cougars in the 100 free with a third-place finish at 43.82.

Purcell’s 299.25 was good for third place in Friday’s 3-meter diving event. Chase Hindmarsh followed in fourth with a score of 298.80.

Women’s Recap

BYU women’s swim and dive posted four runner-up performances at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Friday. The Cougars placed two swimmers in the top three of the 100 breast with Mackenzie Miller Lung in second at 1:00.78 and Jasmine Anderson clocking 1:01.82 to take third.

Lucy Warnick went 2:02.83 to finish runner-up in the 200 individual medley ahead of the Wildcats’ Charlie Millard and Kesley Wasikowski. Victoria Schreiber and Megan Bergstrom gave BYU two in the top three in the 1650 free. Schreiber finished in 17:07.09 while Bergstrom notched a season-best 17:22.12.

Brooklyn Larson Clouse and Alexia Jackson Hansen took second and third, respectively, the 3-meter dive. Larson Clouse recorded a score of 275.40 while Jackson Hansen scored 273.75.

BYU also placed three in the top five of the 200 fly race with Lucy Marek, Abril Arias and Ellie Boyer within 0.52  seconds of each other in spots three through five.

BYU finishes its weekend dual meet with Arizona on Saturday. Events resume at 10:30 a.m. MST with the 200 medley relay.
