Smith earns singles victory, No. 36 BYU falls to No. 8 Texas, 6-1

Junior Maddy Smith earned a singles victory as No. 36 BYU women's tennis fell to No. 8 Texas 6-1 Saturday afternoon.

AUSTIN, Texas — Junior Maddy Smith earned a singles victory as No. 36 BYU women's tennis fell to No. 8 Texas 6-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars dropped to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in Big 12 play, while the Longhorns improved to 17-4 overall and 10-1 in conference.

Smith defeated Texas' Shachf Lieberman 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) to improve her singles record to 6-3 on the season, securing the lone win of the day for BYU.

Texas clinched the doubles point and led 1-0 heading into singles play.

- Taisiya Pachkaleva (UT) def. Kara Wheatley (BYU), 6-4, 6-2
- Vivian Ovrootsky (UT) def.  Emilee Astle (BYU), 7-5, 6-1
- Maddy Smith (BYU) def. Shachf Lieberman (UT) 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7)

The order of finish was 3, 4, 5, 2, 6, 1

Texas won five of the six singles matches to secure the 6-1 victory over BYU.

The Cougars will return home to complete the regular season, facing Cincinnati at 12 p.m. MDT Thursday and West Virginia at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday.
