PROVO, Utah — Five Cougars scored in double figures as BYU defeated Oklahoma State 85-69 Tuesday night in the Marriott Center.

“Obviously, a tale of two halves," first-year head coach Keving Young said. "I thought our defense in the first half was tremendous which allowed us to get out and run and play a free-flowing game, which I think is our strength. In the second half they got hot from three and we had to make some adjustments. More than anything I was just proud of our guys for their response.”

Trevin Knell led BYU with 18 points shooting 4-of-9 from deep to tally his 30th career game with three or more 3-pointers. Dallin Hall scored a season-high 14 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from three. Richie Saunders chipped in 12 and Egor Demin and Keba Keita added 10, respectively. 

Keita collected nine rebounds to lead the Cougars with Fousseyni Traore pulling down seven to move up to No. 15 on BYU's all-time rebounding list with 780 career rebounds.

Demin recored eight assists to go along with five rebounds ,two steals and two blocks.  

BYU never trailed in the 40-minute contest and held its largest lead at 27 with 3:23 remaining in the first half. Oklahoma State closed the gap to three points with 13:23 left in the game, but BYU outscored the Cowboys 34-21 in the closing minutes. 

The Cougars made 27-of-52 shots from the floor for 52 percent and 12-of-28 from range for 43 percent. BYU outrebounded Oklahoma State 38-26 and tallied 18 assists to the Cowboys' 16. BYU controlled points off the bench (29-19), points in the paint (30-24) and second-chance points (12-4). 

First Half
Mawot Mag scored the first points of the game on a shot fake and drive to the rim for two. Saunders scored the next five for the Cougars going 2-of-2 from the free throw line and connecting on a 3-pointer from the corner. The Cowboys banked in a shot from deep and Knell responded with a 3-pointer of his own. Despite committing three turnovers in the first five minutes, BYU led 10-6 at the first media timeout of the game. 

The Cougars went on to score the next seven points out of the media break to cap off a 10-0 scoring run. BYU led 17-7 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first frame.

Knell sunk his second 3-pointer of the half and Saunders found a cutting Keita for a dunk. On the ensuing possession, Knell got his defender in the air and drove past for two more. Hall connected on a 3-pointer in transition and the Cowboys were forced to call a timeout as BYU increased its lead to 14, ahead 29-15 with 7:30 left on the clock. 

Seconds out of the timeout, Knell made another shot from deep to put him in first-half double digits for the third time of the season and the ninth time of his career. Hall made three free throws, Knell two and Mag finished a jumper as BYU led 39-15 with 3:49 remaining. 

Oklahoma State ended BYU’s 18-0 run with a free throw to close out a scoring drought that spanned nearly five-and-a-half minutes for the Cowboys. 

Keita had two dunks as the Cougars took a 20-point lead into halftime, ahead 46-26.

Knell led BYU at the half with 13 points on 3-of-6 from deep and five rebounds. Denim dished out five assists and chipped in four rebounds. 

As a whole, the Cougars shot 15-of-25 from the field and 5-of-12 from deep while holding the Cowboys to just 8-of-31 from the floor and 4-of-12 from range. BYU also led the rebounding battle at 23-13.

Second Half
Knell picked up right where he left off nailing a 3-pointer just 10 seconds into the second half. The Cowboys answered with back-to-back threes and a layup off of a BYU turnover. Saunders knocked down a pair of free throws but a pullup jumper and Oklahoma State 3-pointer forced BYU to call timeout. The Cowboys opened up the second half on a 15-5 run to pull within 10, down 41-51. 

Out of the timeout, Oklahoma State scored five-straight before Hall made two 3-pointers within two minutes to respark the Cougars’ offense. BYU led 59-50 with 11:30 left in the contest. 

Demin scored eight points in just over three minutes on an old-fashioned three-point play, layup in transition and 3-pointer on the left wing. With 7:44 remaining, the Cougars increased their lead back to 14, ahead 71-57. 

Hall found an open Saunders on the perimeter for three and a cutting Keita for two as the Cougars’ offense continued to roll. With two minutes remaining, BYU led 80-67.

In the final two minutes, Baker connected on a 3-pointer, Mag a free throw and BYU won 85-69.
