POCATELLO, Idaho — BYU track and field throwers Danny Bryant and Gretchen Hoekstre claim program top-10 records at the Idaho State Snake River Open.
"Today was a good meet for athletes to help prepare them for our bigger travel meets coming up," said throws coach Niklas Arrhenius. "Gretchen has fouled some big throws earlier this year and I’m so happy she was able to get one in the ring and get a new PR. Danny is now number five all-time and I believe he passed my father on the top ten board, which is a fun thing for me as his coach. I’m hoping they both can improve in New York next week. The rest of the throwers had some good throws and it was a good experience."
Bryant threw for a 19.25m/63-2 mark in the men's shot put for first place overall, as part of his two event wins of the day. His performance moved him to No. 5 all-time in program records. The senior was a First Team All-American in the outdoor event, fourth place at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor National Championships with a 20.02m/65-8.25 mark. Bryant also competed in the men's weight throw at the Idaho State meet over the weekend where he took first overall again with a 18.25m/59-10.5 throw.
"I felt good about this meet," said Bryant. "I got my mind right and was able to get one out there."
Hoekstre threw 17.17m/56-4 in the women's shot put which solidifies her No. 2 spot in program records with a new personal best. Her previous personal best in the event was 17.10m/56-1.25 back in 2022. The outing saw her claim one of two wins on the day, also earning the overall top place in the women's weight throw with a 16.80m/55-1.5 mark.
