Cougars fall to Thunderbirds 194.750-193.375

Andersen set the Cougars' high-score of the season on the balance beam.

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women's gymnastics team fell to Southern Utah 194.750-193.375 on Friday evening.

The highest scores of the evening came from BYU’s senior Anna Bramblett-Wilde (9.925) on the uneven bars and sophomore Brynlee Andersen (9.950) on the balance beam. These are the Cougars' first scores above the 9.990 threshold of the season.

The Cougars shined on the floor exercise, where they recorded the second-highest team floor score of the season with a 48.825.

BYU started its night on the vault, where junior Kylie Eaqunito led the team, to help the Cougars finish their first rotation with a score of 48.475. 

The Thunderbirds took an early lead after their bar rotation with a score of 49.050.

BYU went to take their turn on the bars, where freshman Addi Glazier marked her first time competing as a Cougar. Bramblett-Wilde led BYU with a 9.925, recording the second-highest event score from a Cougar all season.

The bar swingers claimed an event total of 48.050 to add to their overall score of 96.525.

SUU completed its second rotation with an event score of 48.775, holding its lead with a total score of 97.825.

The Cougars’ third event was the balance beam, where they were led by Andersen (9.950), who notched the season-high event score for BYU. Mina Margraf-Benson (9.850) and and Eliza Millar-Crossman (9.825) also were strong additions to the final beam score of 48.025.

The Thunderbirds finished their floor rotation with a 48.600, maintaining their overall lead at 146.425 over the Cougars’ 144.55.

In their highest-scoring team event of the evening, the Cougars scored a 48.825 on the floor exercise. Sophie Dudley had the highest individual floor score with a 9.850, her highest score on floor of the season. Deb Silva competed the floor exercise for the the first time in her career and recorded a 9.725.

SUU completed the night with a 194.750 to BYU’s 193.375.

The Cougars will head to the Maverick Center on Monday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. for the sixth annual Best of Utah meet, competing against SUU, Utah State and Utah.
