LUBBOCK, Texas – The Cougars' second-half comeback came up short as BYU fell to Texas Tech 70-65 at United Supermarket Arena on Saturday night.

BYU led by one after the opening frame, but Texas Tech outscored the Cougars 21-10 in the second to take a 10-point lead into the break. BYU picked up the defensive pressure in the second half, forcing nine Lady Raider turnovers, leading to nine Cougar points.

Delaney Gibb and Amari Whiting led the BYU attack with 18 and seven second-half points, respectively. Hattie Ogden who provided valuable minutes off the bench, banked in a triple from the left with 27 seconds remaining to pull the Cougars within two, but it wasn’t enough as Texas Tech made free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

Gibb led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-15 from the field and 4-for-7 shooting from downtown. The Big 12 Freshman of the Week also added three assists and a steal in the loss. Whiting set a new career high in steals with five to go along with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Texas Tech’s backcourt duo of Bailey Maupin and Jasmine Shavers combined for 37 points to end the Lady Raiders' five-game skid.

First Quarter
Calvert opened the scoring for the Cougars with a hook shot off the glass for two to take an early 2-0 lead. The Lady Raiders squared it at two before the teams went nearly three minutes without a made field goal. Texas Tech made two free throws and hit a three to take a 7-2 lead at the first-quarter media timeout.

Out of the media timeout, Kendra Gillispie scored inside to pull BYU within three at 7-4 before a second Lady Raiders triple and layup on consecutive possessions.

BYU forced three consecutive Lady Raider turnovers and Gillispie, Whiting and Delaney Gibb turned them into points, scoring on four-straight possessions for an 8-0 run to run to knot the game at 12 with 2:09 left in the first.

Second Quarter
The Lady Raiders scored four straight points to take a three-point lead two minutes into the second before a score by Gillispie to pull within two at 19-17. On the next Cougar possession, Whiting drove baseline and scored off the window to knot the game at 19. Scores on the next three Texas Tech possessions pushed the advantage to 25-19 before a mid-range jumper by Gibb.

After the media timeout, BYU went 3:30 without a made field goal in which time the Lady Raiders scored seven-straight points to take a 32-21 lead.

Emma Calvert ended the scoring drought with 1:45 left in the half with a paint-touch score. On the next trip down the floor, Cannon was fouled and connected on a pair of free throws to pull the Cougars within seven at 32-25 before Tech hit a three as the clock expired to take a 10-point advantage into the break.

Third Quarter
BYU started the third quarter with just one made field goal and one from Whiting as Tech pushed its lead to 16 in the first 4:30. With 5:15 left, Gibb made two freebies followed by a Kambree Barber layup, assisted by Gibb to cut the deficit to 12.

After a Lady Raider bucket, Gibb hit the Cougars’ first triple with 3:52 to play in the third to pull BYU within 11. Barber scored on the next BYU trip to cut the lead to single digits at 46-37.  In the last minute of the quarter, Gibb went on a personal 5-0 run followed by a free throw by Calvert to climb within eight at 52-44 heading to the final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
Texas Tech started the fourth with a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 57-44 before a floater dropped for Gibb to end the run. The Lady Raiders scored four more before a Brinley Cannon three-point play with 6:31 to play to pull the Cougars back within 12 at 61-49.

After the media timeout, Gibb who was held in check in the first half, hit back-to-back threes to cut the Texas Tech lead from 12 to six with 3:55 to play. After scoring 22 points on 53.3 shooting, Gibb fouled out with 3:02 left.

After two Lady Raider free throws, Whiting went to the line and missed both but grabbed her own miss and made the putback layup to again climb within six. With 1:21 to go, Whiting drove into the lane and connected on a floater that cut the deficit to four.

With 26.3 seconds to play, Hattie Ogden scored her first points since November 29 as she banked in a left-wing triple to pull BYU within two at 67-65. With the Cougars down three, Cannon got a contested look from the corner to send the game to overtime, but it went in and out, ending the BYU's comeback effort.

The Cougars' next road test will come on Wednesday, Jan. 22 as they travel to Ames to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The game is set to tip at 6:30 p.m. CT with the game broadcast on ESPN+ and BYU Radio.
