AMES, Iowa — Delaney Gibb and Kemery Congdon finished in double figures as BYU fell to the Iowa State Cyclones 82-59 on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cougars got off to a hot start, leading 15-4 in the early going and trailed by just five at the half, but 19 turnovers proved costly in the 23-point loss. Iowa State capitalized, scoring 28 points off BYU giveaways and knocking down 24 offerings from the charity stripe.

Gibb led BYU with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting while Congdon scored 16 points on 6-of-9 from the floor and a 4-for-5 clip from deep. The freshman guard also grabbed four boards, dished four assists and recorded two steals in the loss. Congdon added an assist and a rebound.

Iowa State’s Audi Crooks led all scorers with 24 points while adding three assists and two rebounds. Her frontcourt tandem Addy Brown finished with 22 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the win over the Cougars.

First Quarter
Emma Calvert opened the scoring with an 18-foot jumper to take a 2-0 lead on BYU’s first possession before ISU squared the game at two on its first possession. Kemery Congdon hit her first offering from behind the arc before a Gibb steal turned into a right-wing triple from Lauren Davenport to take an 8-2 lead with 7:55 to play in the first.

Congdon and Calvert followed a Cyclone bucket with back-to-back mid-range jumpers before Gibb knocked down a right-wing triple to cap a 7-0 run that gave the Cougars a 15-4 lead at the first-quarter media timeout.

ISU made a three out of the timeout to trim the BYU lead to eight with 4:35 left as the Cougars missed its next four field goal attempts before a driving layup by Kambree Barber to retake a double-digit lead with 2:08 to go in the frame.  

Second Quarter
BYU led 18-12 after the first quarter but turned the ball over eight times before the second-quarter media timeout leading to five Iowa State points that pulled the Cyclones within three, 20-17. A corner triple from Brinley Cannon to stop the run and retake a six-point advantage with 6:18 to play in the half.

Out of the timeout, ISU’s Addy Brown went on a personal 11-3 run to eliminate the Cougar advantage and take a 30-25 lead to put BYU down five with 2:28 to go.

Gibb ended the run with a finish at the rim plus the foul to bring the Cougars back within two at 30-27. The Cyclones hit their final seven field goal attempts of the half to take a 38-33 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter
The Cougars were held without a field goal for the first 2:48 of the third quarter at which time Iowa State went on a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 15. Gibb ended the ISU run with a jumper from the right elbow before Congdon trimmed the lead further to 10 with a deep three from the left wing with 5:11 left in the third.

A jumper by Congdon matched the ISU score to keep the Cougars within 10 before four straight Cyclone points to go up 14. After two freebies by Gibb, Iowa State finished the third with an 11-1 run to take a 22-point advantage into the final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
The Cyclones pushed the lead to 25 just 50 seconds into the final quarter, but BYU wouldn’t go quietly as Congdon and Cannon hit back-to-back triples to cut the deficit to 19 with 6:05 to go. Despite numerous Cougar scores, Iowa State answered with a score on the other end to close out an 82-59 win.
