LIHUE, Hawaii – The Cougars shot 1-over in the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hokuala on Thursday.

Sophomore Peter Kim and senior Zac Jones led BYU with their 1-under rounds of 69. Kim made the fourth-most birdies in of the field and made an eagle on the par 5 hole 10. Jones performed well on the par 4s with a 3.83, average.

No. 16 Utah leads the field with its 7-under 273, UNLV and No. 10 Illinois are tied for second place, each one shot ahead of the Cougars. New Mexico rounds out the top five with its 2-over 282.

Simon Kwon carded a 1-over 71. Like his teammate, Kwon’s play was highlighted by his eagle on the 10th hole. The Salt Lake City native sits tied for 24th place.

Senior Cole Ponich notched a 2-over 72 on his opening round to put him in a tie for 37th going into tomorrow’s second round. Kevin Wu shot a 3-over 73, placing him tied for 47th.

Competing as an individual, Tyson Shelley shot 6-over today to sit in a tie for 75th.
