"We are excited to be going into the Big 12 Championships for the second time. It’s great to get the team together at the same meet. Our women are in a great position to battle for a top two or three spot and our men hope to improve on last year. The conference meet is all about scoring as many points as you can, without over fatiguing your national qualifiers who we want to score well at the national meet in two weeks. It’s possible to do both, but it requires careful planning."

Ed Eyestone

Head Coach

The men's sprints head into the meet after a string of recent successes. Josh Taylor charted new school records in three different events in just over eight days. The sprinter from Richfield, Utah holds the individual program record or was on the program-holding relay squad in the 400-meter, 4x400-meter and distance medley relay.

"I remember talking about this moment at the beginning of the season," said Taylor. "I feel like our team has prepared well since that day and because of that we are ready to come home with some hardware.”

"The conference championship is an exciting meet and the group is ready to compete," said sprints coach Kyle Grossarth. "We are coming off of a great last meet and carrying some momentum into this championship. The sprinters and hurdlers are excited about competing and scoring points for the team. It is going to be really fast and exciting."

The men's middle distance crew is headlined by true freshman Tyler Mathews. The product of Mesa, Arizona's Red Mountain High School already achieved the school record in the 800m with a 1:46.62 finishing time. Mathews was also a part of the distance medley relay squad that cracked a new school record of 9:20.72 at the Alex Wilson Invitational.

"Training has gone really well this winter and the races have been good learning experiences up to this point," said Mathews. "Now it’s time to apply both towards championship season. Every person in our group is going with the intention of scoring solid points in their events and I think they’re well prepared to do it."

Other notable faces to watch include Danny Bryant from the throws group as well as Ben Barton in the heptathlon. Bryant threw a personal best in the indoor shot put with a 19.56m/64-2.25 mark earlier this season. Barton achieved a new program record of 5814 points in the heptathlon to start the season as well.

Lexy Halladay-Lowry and Riley Chamberlain headline the women's distance squad as both have broken two school records thus far into the indoor season. Halladay-Lowry broke the 15-minute barrier in the 5000m Jan. 31 at the John Thomas Terrier Classic with a Big-12 leading 14:57.63. Two weeks later, she ran 8:40.60 for another school record and Big 12 No. 1 time.

Chamberlain broke the program record in the mile at the Terrier Classic in a Big 12-leading time of 4:26.19. Two weeks later, she split 4:24 for her 1600m split to help her DMR squad break a school record and the NCAA all-conditions record.

Sami Oblad leads the sprints group having broken the 400m school record Feb. 15 in Albuquerque. The senior from Stansbury Park, Utah ran 51.71 to lead the Big 12 this season and rank No. 4 in the NCAA.

"I think conference is going to be a show of people stepping to the plate and performing their best. That is kind of an expectation held among the whole team. For myself, I want to prove that I can run that time again."

Maren Garnett leads the jumps and multis group with her No. 3 Big 12 ranking and No. 11 NCAA ranking. Garnett cleared 4.45m/14-7.25 at the 2024 December Invitational. Teammates Mayci Taylor and Rebekah Erikson rank No. 5 in the pentathlon and pole vault, respectively.

"The jumps and combined event group is ready to compete," said coach Tiffany Hogan. "The results in training have shown that they are peaking at just the right time. They have done all the preparation they needed to and I’m excited to see what they can do. We have a couple veterans that will lead the way in the combined events and pole vault. We also have a few freshmen ready to step up and see how it is to compete at a national-caliber meet."

Gretchen Hoekstre will represent the throws group with her personal-best 17.17m/56-4 in the shot put. The senior from Seaside, Oregon ranks No. 2 in the conference in the event. She will also look to improve upon her season best of 17.83m/58-6 in the weight throw.
