VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — BYU men’s track and field saw athletes earn 11 First Team All-American and two Second Team All-Amercian honors through two days of competition at the 2025 Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening.
The Cougars placed 14th overall in the team scores with 18 points. The Cougars ranked third out of Big 12 programs behind Oklahoma State in fifth and Texas Tech in eighth.
“We went into this knowing we would have to ball out to crack the top-20,” said director of track and field Ed Eyestone. “I loved the different pieces from various event groups. It wasn’t a one dimensional 14th-place finish for our team, it was a 14th-place finish from multiple event categories. They were getting things right. Student athletes rose up at the most important time of the year at the national meet. To finish top 15 in track and field, we are feeling pretty good about the program we’ve built.”
Ben Barton completed competition of the men’s heptathlon Saturday afternoon with a fourth-place overall finish through the seven events of the men’s heptathlon with 5898 points.
“I am proud of Ben,” said multi-event coach Tiffany Hogan. “The heptathlon was quite a battle for the top eight spots. For him to come away from the meet with a fourth-place finish is amazing. He has had a lot of setbacks with his health the last few weeks and even during the meet. Yet, he put up a great performance that was just shy of his personal best that he set two weeks ago.”
Danny Bryant threw an 18.73m/61-5.5 mark in the shot put for a 12th-place overall finish. It was the senior’s first appearance at the indoor national meet. Bryant finished fifth overall at the 2025 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this season with a 19.05m/62-6 mark.
“Danny gave a good effort today,” said throws coach Niklas Arrhenius. “His first throw was good technically, just didn’t have the intensity we wanted. Then on his next two throws, he struggled to get that same technical feeling with higher intensity. I’m proud of him for qualifying for this meet and giving his best effort and being a second-team All-American. I’m excited for what he can do outdoors in the coming months.”
The men’s 4x400-meter relay concluded the evening for the Cougars with a 3:05.56 finish. The team comprised of Eli Hazlett, Trey Jackson, Ty Oustrich and Josh Taylor secured BYU a sixth-place finish.
"For Josh, Trey and I, this moment has been four-five years in the making," said Hazlett. "We’ve shared the same goal for our entire careers, score at nationals and be First Team All-Americans. Tonight, we executed well and got it done. We got lucky this year and got two younger guys to step up on the biggest stages. They both showed up every time when they got the call. Jonah [Heimuli] got it done for us at Big 12’s and Ty got it done for us at nationals. We could not have gotten to where we are without those two guys. I see those two fully filling our shoes in the future. We’re grateful but never satisfied and are all more hungry than ever for the outdoor season."
