Women's Season Preview

The women's team turns its attention to outdoor following an indoor season that saw a second-place finish at the Big 12 championships and a ninth-place finish at NCAA championships.

The women's distance squad will be led by indoor two-time First Team All-American Lexy Halladay-Lowry. The senior will return to the 3000-meter steeplechase and 5000m distances. DMR anchor Riley Chamberlain will also headline the distance squad in the 1500m. Both women won Big 12 individual championships this indoor season (Halladay-Lowry 5000m, Chamberlain mile).

Gretchen Hoekstre will lead the throws group in her final season as a Cougar. Hoekstre competed at the NCAA Championships in the discus last season and broke BYU's program record in the event, throwing 57.04m/187-2.

Senior Sami Oblad headlines the sprints and hurdles group as she recently earned Second Team All-America honors in the 400m at indoor championships. Oblad also ran the 400m leg in the national title-winning distance medley relay. She owns both the indoor and outdoor 400m records at BYU.

The jumps and multis group will be led by pole vaulters Maren Garnett and Rebekah Erikson. Garnett owns the indoor school record at 4.46m/14-7.5 and Erikson owns the outdoor record at 4.31m/14-1.75. Both women have competed at an NCAA championship and look to qualify for Eugene in June.

The men's sprints will carry depth headed into the outdoor season with three Cougars having recently taken the top-three program spots in the 400-meter this indoor season: Josh Taylor, Trey Jackson and Eli Hazlett.

Ben Barton will headline the men's multi-event/jumps group in the men's decathlon. Barton recently took fourth at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the heptathlon. He also charted a new indoor school record in the heptathlon earlier in the season with 5944 points.
