NAPA VALLEY, Calif. – Men’s golf (291-296-272–859) finished in third place at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday.
Cole Ponich led the Cougars in today’s final round with a 7-under 65, finishing in a tie for fifth. The senior set a new career best, which included five consecutive birdies on his front nine. Ponich finished with a 5-under 211 total.
Tohoku Fukushi (Japan) took home the team title with their 23-under 841 three-day total. Santa Clara (282-287-278–847) finished in second place with the Cougars taking third ahead of Nihon (China) University (288-282-295–865) and San Francisco (293-281-292–866) that rounded out the top five.
Zac Jones finished in seventh place, his best result this season. The senior took advantage of the par-5s, with a 4.33 scoring average, the second-best in the individual field. Jones shot a 4-under 212 overall, with rounds of 69, 77, and 66. His play was highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole in the third round.
Junior Tyson Shelley shot 1-under in the final round, featuring an eagle on the par-5 ninth. Shelley finished tied for 19th.
Simon Kwon (72-77-73–222) finished 6-over, tying for 33rd. Peter Kim was one shot behind Kwon, finishing tied for 36th at 7 over.
Kevin Wu, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 45th.
The Cougars carded 53 birdies throughout the tournament, the second-most out of the team field.
