STANFORD, Calif. – The Cougars (275) shot 5-under in their opening round of The Goodwin to co-lead the team field at Stanford Golf Course

“Going into today, my mindset was to hit a lot of fairways and greens,” Peter Kim said. “As a team, we tried to carry our momentum from the final round on Tuesday into today. The last couple of tournaments have been a struggle during the first round, so it was nice to get off to a good start.”

Tied for third, Kim is leading the Cougars after day one with his 3-under 67. The sophomore carded three birdies and managed to complete a bogey-free round. Kim leads the individual field in pars with 15.

BYU is co-leading the team field alongside fellow Big 12 conference member Colorado. No. 13 Utah holds third place at 4-under-par, while Santa Clara and No. 22 Pepperdine are tied for fourth.

“The golf course is tough this year for The Goodwin,” head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “Our guys hit a bunch of fairways today, which got us off to a great start. If we get some putts to go in, we will be in good shape.”

Junior Simon Kwon is tied for ninth with his 2-under 68. Kwon made six birdies, the fourth-most out of any player in the field. Additionally, the Salt Lake City native has averaged a 3.60 on each par 4 to lead the playing field in that category.

Seniors Cole Ponich and Zac Jones each sit tied for 30th with their even pars. Tyson Shelley is tied for 125th.

Kevin Wu, who is competing as an individual, is in a tie for 111th place.

“Stanford’s tournament always has a championship feel to it,” Director of Golf Todd Miller said. “They do an incredible job running the event and the golf course is one of the best we play all year. I felt like we had the toughest draw of the day with our tee times. It was windy and raining on and off all afternoon. I was impressed with the way our team managed the wind off the tee and took what the course gave them. If we can continue to hit fairways, we will have a great chance to win this event.”

The Cougars tee off for the second round of the tournament on Friday at 8 a.m. MST. Follow live scoring on Scoreboard.
