INDIANAPOLIS – Junior distance runner James Corrigan was named to The Bowerman Watchlist on Thursday afternoon as announced by the NCAA.

Full Release

Corrigan becomes the fourth BYU man to be named to the prestigious track and field watchlist following in the footsteps of Miles Batty (2011, 2012), Zach McWhorter (2022), and 2023 semifinalist Kenneth Rooks.

"James Corrigan’s journey to the Olympic Games last year was almost that of a folk hero," said BYU director of track and field Ed Eyestone. "To lower his personal best by 37 seconds over the course of the season, capturing a spot on the Olympic team and running a last second solo qualifying race is the stuff of fiction but it actually happened. Part of what made it  happen was James’ belief in himself and his ability to try what others deemed impossible. James is approaching this season with big aspirations and is looking forward to being the best that he can be. James is very easy going and fun loving off the track but he is excited this season on the track to see how far he can lower his American collegiate record in the steeplechase."

Corrigan competed for Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The race he qualified in was at the 2024 Penn Relays Summer Showcase where he ran the fastest time in the event by a collegiate American in 8:13.87.

The Cougar additionally was named Big 12 Athlete of the Week earlier this week with an 8:43.57 at the Willie Williams Classic.

"Every December when I attend The Bowerman Award ceremony, I am blown away by the accomplishments of the finalists," said assistant men's distance coach Ryan Waite. "And then to see what those athletes go on to do in their professional careers is even more incredible. So to be listed as a potential candidate for the award is an amazing honor for James. We’re proud of how he represents our program."

Corrigan will compete next at the Stanford Invitational with his fellow Cougars Friday through Saturday Apr. 4-5.
