AMES, Iowa – No. 23 BYU defeated No. 10 Iowa State Cyclones 88-85 in a double overtime on Tuesday evening at Hilton Coliseum, giving the Cougars their first-ever win in Ames.
After trailing by nine midway through the first half, BYU outscored the Cyclones 28-10 over the final over the 10 minutes to head into halftime with a nine-point lead. The vistiors would extend the lead to 21 points with 13 minutes remaining in regulation an alley-oop from Trey Stewart to Dallin Hall. Iowa State would get the crowd into the game outscoring BYU 33-14 over the final 12 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Hall and Egor Demin combined to score 16 of BYU's 20 points after regulation with the junior knocking down the first of two to secure the 88-85 victory and hand the Cyclones their second home loss of the season.
Saunders finished with a game-high 23 points as the junior went 13-of-13 from the free throw line, tied for the sixth-most free throws made with no miss in a single game in program history. Hall had a season-high 22 points going 7-of-13 from the field, 4-of-9 from three and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Keba Keita had a season-high 15 points, nine of those coming on the offensive glass tying the program record for offensive rebounds in a single game in program history. The junior also had seven points and three blocks.
The Cougars outreounded the Cyclones by 28, 52-24, while turning the ball over a season-high 29 times resulting in 34 points off turnovers for Iowa State.
BYU is the first team to have 29+ turnovers against an AP Top 25 opponent and still win the game since Iowa had 31 in a win at No. 10 Kansas on December 8, 1998.

Tonight’s matchup marked the first double overtime game for BYU since its 95-87 win over Pacific on January 30, 2021.
First Half
For nearly five minutes from the tip, neither team was able to make a basket. BYU had five turnovers during that span, preventing them from opening the scoring. The Cyclones got on the board first at 15:18.
With a 5-0 Cyclone lead at 13:35, Hall was able to put down BYU’s first points of the game from deep. Over the next minute and a half, the Cyclones went on a 5-0 run, which was stopped by Fousseyni Traore’s layup at 11:48 to bring the score within five points.
Saunders e made all three free throws and after stopping the Cyclones on their next possession, Stewart hit a jumper to close a 5-0 BYU run to bring the score to 14-10 with 9:14 remaining.
Keita kick-started a 7-0 Cougar run with his made second-chance jumper shot. Mihailo Boskovic drained a 3-pointer and Hall added a layup to continue the momentum.
From 4:42 to 1:03, Saunders, Demin and Mawot Mag collectively went on a 16-2 run over the Cyclones while gaining their first lead of the game. The highlights of this run were four made free throws from Saunders and two straight layups in 11 seconds from Mag. Going into the locker room, BYU had a lead at 33-24 over Iowa State.
Saunders led the Cougars at the break with 10 points, while going 7-of-7 from the free throw line. BYU out-scored Iowa State 45.5 percent to 25.0, out-assisted five to two and put down 12 paints inside the paint to the Cyclones’ two. The Cougars had 12 turnovers in the first half but only granted Iowa State seven points off of those giveaways.
Second Half
After keeping Iowa State off the board on their first possession of the half, BYU started off strong from the 3-point line with a made jumper from both Mag and Trevin Knell.
At 16:30, Demin made two free throws to extend BYU’s lead to 42-28. Hall made another 3-ball to capitalize on the Cougars’ largest lead of the night.
Saunders went on a 7-2 run, sinking a 3-pointer off an assist from Trey Stewart, followed by two free throws and a layup. At 13:16, Stewart recorded another assist, setting up a crowd-quieting dunk by Hall to give the Cougars a 21-point advantage.

The Cyclones engineered an 17-2 run to cut BYU’s lead to six points with 7:19 on the clock. More Cougar turnovers prevented them from scoring in the middle of the second half.
Hall sunk a three courtesy of Demin and Saunders made two free throws from an Iowa State technical to regain the double figure lead. The Cyclones replied with a 8-0 run to make it a one-possession game.
Due to BYU fouls, Iowa State made three free throws in just over one minute to keep the game tight. Mag was fouled and made one of his free throws to maintain BYU’s lead.
Free throws on both side of the court resulted in a tie game 68-68 at the end of regulation.
First Overtime
After winning the tipoff, Demin knocked down a three from the corner to initiate some BYU momentum. After a BYU turnover on an inbound pass, Keita rushed down the court and blocked a layup to keep the Cougar lead. Iowa State made a 3-point jumper and a layup to take the lead at 73-72.

Hall answered with a 3-pointer but Iowa State tied it up again with 1:53 remaining. Each team exchanged two made free throws and a layup to keep the score knotted at 79-79.
Double Overtime
After the Cyclones won the tip, Hall had a takeaway that resulted in an off-the-glass layup to open the second overtime period. On Iowa State’s next possession, Knell notched a steal, leading to an in the paint jumper from Saunders to bring the Cougar advantage to four.
With 1:51 remaining, the Cyclones made a layup, taking the score to 87-85 BYU. The Cougars held the Cyclones on the defensive end and after Hall made a free throw with one second remaining to seal the win at 88-85.
