BYU to face Utah, Denver and Stanford Thursday Evening

After beating Utah State in yesterday’s play-in round, the Cougars will compete in the evening session of day two for the NCAA Gymnastics Regional.

PROVO, Utah – BYU gymnastics will compete against No. 4 Utah, No. 13 Stanford and No. 18 Denver tomorrow at 7 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center for the evening session of the NCAA Utah Gymnastics Regional competition.

Day 1 NCAA Regional Highlights

  • Kylie Eaquinto scored 9.825 on vault and bars and 9.875 on floor
  • Brynlee Andersen notched the highest score of the meet with a 9.9 on beam
  • After missing several competitions, Ava Jorgensen tied her season-high vault score with a 9.825
  • The Cougars earned a meet-high 49.075 on beam
  • Chloee Hoke tied her career-high beam score with a 9.850

THE COUGARS. BYU faced Utah State in the play-in round of the NCAA Regionals on Wednesday, April 2 and won 195.50-194.475. BYU found podium finishes on every event, taking home the highest scores of the day. Eaquinto and Jorgensen led on vault with a pair of 9.825’s, Addilyn Glazier and Eaquinto took first on bars with another pair of 9.825’s, Andersen led on beam with her 9.9 and Eaquinto won floor with her 9.875. The Cougars will compete against Utah for the third time this season, Denver for a second time and Stanford for the first time this year. BYU is looking to best its top score of the year at 196.775 as it takes on three of the highest ranked teams in the country tomorrow evening.  

THE UTES. No. 4 Utah finished its first season in the Big 12 with a regular season title and tournament win, boasting a conference record of 6-0. The Utes have an NQS of 197.780, with their highest score at 198.100 against No. 5 UCLA. Four Utah gymnasts received All-American honors this season, namely Grace McCallum, Makenna Smith, Camie Winger and Avery Neff. McCallum was also named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year and Neff was named the conference’s Newcomer of the Year.

THE PIONEERS. No. 18 Denver finished third at the Big 12 Championship with a score of 196.400. Denver finished the season with top-25 rankings on three events (vault, bars, beam). Four of DU’s final team NQSs finished in the top 10 in program history. This will be Denver's 26th consecutive appearance at NCAA Regionals and 28th overall.

THE CARDINAL. No. 13 Stanford finished the season with an NQS of 197.190 with all four events finishing in the top-25 rankings as well. The Cardinal brought home the university’s first ACC title last weekend, posting a season-high score of 197.775.  Stanford's five individual titles mark just the second time in program history that the Cardinal has swept all apparatus and all-around event crowns (last done in 1984).
