BYU lost an extra inning slugfest to TCU, 13-12, on Friday night in the final game of a Big 12 three-game series at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

FORT WORTH, Texas — BYU baseball lost a heartbreaker to TCU, 13-12, in 11 innings on Friday night in the final game of a Big 12 three-game series at Lupton Stadium. With the victory, TCU improves to 25-8 (8-4) on the year, while BYU falls to 15-14 (4-8).

BYU scored 12 runs on nine hits, including a grand slam by Luke Anderson, while TCU had 13 runs on 16 hits.

“A loss like tonight stings—it hurts a lot,” said BYU head coach Trent Pratt, “I’m proud of how hard the guys played. They have a lot of heart, and they don’t quit. We’ll get back to work and find ways to get better.”

Game Summary
After two scoreless innings to open the game, BYU struck first in the top of the third inning with six runs on three walks and four hits for a 6-0 lead.

Crew McChesney led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a single by Ryder Robinson. Anderson then singled to left to score McChesney and send Robinson to second. Back-to-back walks by Cooper Vest and Brock Watkins plated Robinson and left the bases loaded. After working the count to full, Tate Gambill doubled in the right center gap to clear the bases, then with two outs Parker Goff singled to left to score Gambill for a six-run advantage.

TCU got a run back in the fourth off a solo home run, then exploded for five more runs on five hits in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.  

BYU answered with a run of its own in the top of the six when Goff scored on a wild pitch with bases loaded to give the Cougars a 7-6 lead.

BYU struck for five more runs in the top of the seventh. Watkins led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to second on a walk by Gambill. Goff then singled to left center to score Gambill and move Easton Jones to third, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. After a walk by McChesney to load the bases, Anderson hit a 2-0 fastball over the center field wall to clear the bases and give the Cougars a 12-6 lead.

TCU cut the BYU lead in half in the bottom half of the seventh on a three-run homer to bring the score to 12-9.

After a scoreless eighth inning by both squads, the Horned Frogs tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with three runs on three hits, including a two-run pinch-hit home run—TCU’s fifth home run—to send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless 10th inning, TCU walked off the win with three singles in the 11th for a final score of 13-12 in a game that lasted four hours and 20 minutes.
