SAN DIEGO - Gretchen Hoekstre threw BYU's No. 2 all-time mark in the shot put Saturday afternoon at the Triton Track & Field Stadium.
Women's Recap
Hoekstre threw 16.99m/55-9 to place second in the women's shot put at the Triton Invitational and earn an outdoor personal best. The senior from Seaside, Oregon was previously tied for BYU's No. 2 all-time mark with a throw of 16.27m/53-4.5 at the BYU Cougar Invitational in May of 2021.
"I wasn’t expecting much at first, but when I started warming up, I felt something in the air," said Hoekstre." I’ve had some big fouls this year and I knew I’d be able to put one in the sector this meet. I’m super happy about that performance and I am hoping to add to it."
Hoekstre owns BYU's discus school record, is No. 2 in the indoor shot put and No. 2 in the outdoor shot put.
Kat Beachler also recorded a personal best in the shot put with a 14.78m/48-6 outing. The freshman placed eighth overall in the elite shot put field.
Lia Pili placed tenth in the open discus competition with a personal-best throw of 43.11m/141-5.
Men's Recap
The men's throws group featured Danny Bryant, Peyton Williams and Tyler Poole compete Saturday in the shot put, hammer throw and discus events.
Bryant led the charge in the men's shot put with a 19.01m/62-4.5 mark that placed him second overall in the elite section of the competition. Williams secured a 16.35m/52-7.75 mark while Poole notched a 15.16m/49-9 outing.
The men's hammer saw Bryant earn an event win with a 60.03m/196-11 personal best. It improved upon his prior best of 57.38m/188-3. Poole tossed 45.18m/148-2 on the day while Williams earned a 44.10m/144-8 mark.
Bryant and Williams both competed in the discus event garnering personal bests in the elite division. Bryant landed a 57.61m/189-0 mark and Williams secured 53.05m/174-0 on the day.

BYU men's and women's track and field will compete at the Weber State and Utah Spring Classic April 11-12. Friday's competition will be held in Ogden with Saturday's being held in Salt Lake City.
