LAWRENCE, Kan. – BYU’s Creed Thompson ran his last lap in 56.02 as the sophomore finished second in the 10,000-meters on the opening night of the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

C. Thompson picked up eight points for the Cougars with his runner-up finish as the sophomore moved from fifth to second in the final 400-meters crossing the finish line in 29:39.36 just ahead of Iowa State’s Rodgers Kiplimo.

Joey Nokes finished fifth for a second straight championships as the senior ran 29:42.14. Davin Thompson would score three more points for the Cougars with a seventh place in a time of 29:47.44.

FULL RESULTS

The Cougars picked up seven points in the javelin, highlighted by a third-place finish by Brinton Paulson. The junior from Orem had his best throw of the competition on his third attempt with a mark of 67.11m/220-2 to finish ahead of Cincinnati’s Ryan Rieckmann and Texas Tech’s Adam Dubois, who both ranked in the Top 20 in the nation heading into the Big 12 Championships. Carson Riner finished eighth to secure a point with a toss of 64.26m/210-10.

Logan Hubler became the seventh-fastest 400-meter hurdler in program history en route to qualifying for Saturday’s final. The junior, who had never run faster than 52 seconds in the event prior to Thursday evening, finished second in his heat and fifth overall, running 50.33 out of Lane 8. Competing in his first Big 12 championships, Brayden Dahl finished 11th, running 51.16.

Carter Cutting punched his ticket to the 1,500-meter final as the sophomore ran 3:44.84 to finish second in the first of three heats. After bidding his time in the middle of the pack, Cutting ran 56.09 for his last 400m to secure to move from fifth to second and secure one of the nine spots in Saturday’s final. Lucas Bons finished fourth in his heat and 14th overall, running 3:46.93.

Ben Barton leads the decathlon after five events with 4,297 points. The junior opened the competition running 10.55 in the 100-meter dash, worth 963 points. He had a personal best performance in the long jump with a mark of 7.26m/23-10, adding 876 more points to the total. After securing 709 points in the shot put (13.69m/44-11), Barton extended his lead over TCU’s Yannik Knoblock with 850 points in the high jump (2.05m/6-8.75) before running the fastest 400-meter time of the day, 48.20, for 899 more points.

Jaden Roskelley finished the opening day of the decathlon 424 points away from Barton as the sophomore sits seventh with 3,873 points. He picked up 874 points in the 100m running 10.94, followed by 883 points in the long jump with the second-longest mark of any competitor, 7.29m/23-11. His throw of 11.09m/36-4.75 in the shot put was worth 551 points. He finished with 794 points in the high jump (1.99m/6-6.25) and 771 points in the 400-meters, running 50.96.

Danny Bryant finished 12th in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.45m/195-0 on his first attempt of the competition. The senior will also compete in the shot put and discus this weekend.
