LAWRENCE, Kansas - Destiny Everett, Alysa Keller and Kat Beachler combined to score 11 points for the Cougars on the first day of the Big 12 Championships at Rock Chalk Park.
Everett placed fouth in the final event of the night, running 33:53.53 in the 10,000m to earn five points for the Cougars. The senior’s performance marks her highest career finish at a Big 12 Championship.
"It feels incredible to be able to contribute to the team in whatever way that I can," said Everett. "I am just so grateful that I got to have another opportunity to race at this level and to fight for my team. It is an honor and a privilege. The whole time I kept reminding myself that this is so much bigger than just me and that I need to do this for my teammates. Nothing motivates me to keep fighting more than that."
Keller and Beachler combined for six team points in the javelin. Keller, a sophomore from Billings, Montana, placed fifth with a throw of 48.36m (158-8), earning four points. Beachler, a freshman from Omaha, Nebraska, took seventh with a personal-best throw of 46.25m (151-9), adding two points and improving her previous best by nearly a meter.
Four BYU women advanced to the finals of the 1500m, each securing a top-two finish in their respective heats. Carmen Alder won heat one in 4:30.30, just ahead of teammate Carlee Hansen, who took the second spot in 4:30.32. Riley Chamberlain claimed heat two with a time of 4:47.94, while Jenna Hutchins won heat three in 4:31.82. The 1500m final will be run on Saturday.
Junior Cameron Bliss sits in 12th place with 3,042 points after the first day of the heptathlon. The Cypress, Texas native opened with a ninth-place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking 14.50. She followed with a 15th-place effort in the high jump, clearing 1.57m (5-1.75), placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 10.94m (35-10.75) and capped the day with a personal-best 25.51 in the 200m for 16th. Bliss returns tomorrow to compete in the long jump, javelin, and 800m to close out the seven-event competition.
Senior Sami Oblad led the way for BYU in the 200m, placing 13th with a time of 23.47. Emily Ellis-Dalley followed in 22nd at 23.83, while Paje Rassmussen broke the 24-second barrier for the first time in her career, clocking a personal-best 23.98 for 23rd.
In the hammer throw, Jayda Lee led the Cougars with a 13th-place finish, recording a mark of 53.59m/175-10. Beachler followed in 17th with a throw of 51.50m/168-11, while senior Gretchen Hoekstre took 18th with a mark of 50.52m/165-9.
