PROVO, Utah. – No. 14-seeded BYU will compete for its second NCAA men’s golf championship title beginning May 22 at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California.
The Cougars’ starting lineup includes seniors Zac Jones and Cole Ponich, juniors Simon Kwon and Tyson Shelley, and sophomore Peter Kim. Freshman Kevin Wu will serve as an alternate.
BYU enters a 30-team field that includes top-ranked Auburn, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Florida State, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 12 Illinois, No. 14 UCLA, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 20 South Carolina, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 22 Georgia, No. 23 Tennessee, No. 24 Texas Tech and No. 25 Duke. Other participating schools include California, USF, Wake Forest, San Diego, Troy, New Mexico, Augusta, Purdue, UNLV, Georgia Tech and Colorado.
The 156-player field also includes six individuals from No. 17 Utah, Duke, Michigan, Kennesaw State, Texas State and Notre Dame.
The tournament opens with 72 holes of stroke play. BYU will compete Thursday through Saturday and again Monday, provided the team is among the top 15. If the Cougars finish in the top 8 after stroke play, they will advance to match play Tuesday and Wednesday to determine the National Champion.
This marks BYU’s 33rd appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Cougars won the title in 1981.
