CARLSBAD, Calif. – The No. 19 ranked BYU men's golf team is in 12th place after 54 holes (289-300-289–878) and are set to advance to the next round on Monday at the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort.

“After a tough round with all the emotions yesterday it feels great to know that our guys still have a chance,” BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. “We haven't advanced to match play since it was instituted, so it’s exciting that this team has a chance to make a little BYU history. We are proud of this team and their grit.”

Peter Kim (71-74-72–217) is leading BYU at 1-over par. The sophomore made three birdies in his third round, putting him in a tie for 22nd. In the par 4 category, Kim has averaged a 3.90, the sixth-best out of any individual.

In order of placement, No. 1 Auburn, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Florida, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Texas, No. 9 Florida State, No. 24 Texas Tech, No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 10 Virginia, No. 21 Pepperdine, No. 16 Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech are the other advancing teams.

Senior Cole Ponich (74-77-72–223) is tied for 71st at 7-over par. Ponich made two consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11 in round three.

At 9-over par, Tyson Shelley is tied for 87th. Simon Kwon is tied for 96th and Zac Jones is tied for 116th.

If BYU can rise to the top eight teams after tomorrow’s final round, they will move into the match play competition on Tuesday.
