The 2025 Big 12 Freshman of the Year will suit up for the Canadian Senior Women's National Team and U23 squad in the lead-up to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

TORONTO – BYU rising sophomore Delaney Gibb was selected to the Canada Senior Women's National Team Athlete Pool, Canada Basketball announced on Monday.

“I am so excited for the future of Canada Basketball and beyond grateful to have been selected into this senior national team athlete pool," said Gibb. "Playing for Canada Basketball has always brought me so much pride and joy. My biggest dream has been to represent Team Canada in the Olympics, so having the opportunity to train with the senior team for this upcoming year means the world to me.” 

Gibb, the 2025 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, will attend training camp for the Canadian Senior Women's National Team and will suit up for the U23 squad in the lead-up to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

"Delaney has a huge list of goals that she wants to accomplish in the game of basketball and the top of that list is to represent Canada as a member of the Canadian Olympic team. While being selected for the pool is a great start, it is just the beginning of a lengthy process that we look forward to helping her navigate. We, as a staff, are fully committed to helping her accomplish her dream."

Canada Basketball announced the hire of Nell Fortner as the new Senior Women's National Team head coach on Monday and rolled out the framework of the program and player expectations around commitment, accountability and culture. Along with the hire, Canada Basketball also revealed the names of the 25 athletes who have committed to the program through the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.

After finishing fourth at the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and making four-straight Olympic appearances, a program best, the team returns several vital veterans. Canada also adds a new generation of college and high school standouts to its player pool for 2025-26.

BYU’s Gibb is one of six active college players selected to the athlete pool along with North Carolina incoming freshman Taliyah Henderson, Michigan sophomore Syla Swords, South Carolina incoming freshman Agot Makeer, Villanova sophomore Jasmine Bascoe and Washington sophomore Averly Howell.

Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team will compete in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, with the top six teams earning a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in March 2026. The team will also hold a training camp this November in Victoria, B.C., to prepare for the next FIBA World Cup qualification stage.

Further details regarding summer programming, the coaching staff, and the team’s roadmap to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will be announced in the coming weeks.
