PROVO, Utah — Throughout BYU's fall camp in 2025, follow BYUCougars.com for position previews of each unit, beginning with the Cougars' quarterback room.
Four quarterbacks currently make up BYU's collection of signal callers led by offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick and assistant quarterbacks coach Matt Mitchell.
Roderick has been in his current role since 2021 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach following a stint from 2018-2020 as the passing game coordinator in addition to the quarterback duties. Originally from Bountiful, Utah, Roderick got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant for the Cougars under LaVell Edwards in 1999 after playing at BYU and Ricks College as a wideout and returner. Roderick was an All-American at Ricks College and a member of the 1996 BYU team that 14-1 and won the Cotton Bowl.
Mitchell, was recently promoted to the assistant quarterbacks coach after serving in an analyst role since 2022. He also served on BYU's staff as an analyst in 2020 and has experience at Baylor, Notre Dame, Western Kentucky and Snow College. Mitchell played receiver at Wheaton College.
Under the tutelage of Roderick and Mitchell, BYU has produced NFL quarterbacks Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall and Kedon Slovis in recent years. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in 2021 is now with the Miami Dolphins after leading BYU to an 11-1 season in 2020. Hall started 25 games for the Cougars with a touchdown to interception ratio of 52 to 11 before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. Slovis spent one season with BYU where he finished his college career with 11,689 passing yards and is now with the Houston Texans.
The upcoming season will feature a quarterback on the roster that has not taken a snap in a game wearing the BYU blue. Though not wearing the "Y" on their helmet, however, two of the quarterbacks already have experience starting Division I football games in redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead and redshirt junior Treyson Bourguet.

Though 36 yards on the ground didn't show it as much, Hillstead is a true dual-threat with real speed.
As a three-year starter at Skyridge High School, Hillstead finished his prep career with 6,898 passing yards and 73 touchdowns to go along with 327 carries, 1,791 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns on the ground.
