PROVO, Utah - BYU men's golfers Kihei Akina, Peter Kim and Tyson Shelley will tee off at the 125th US Amateur Championship Monday at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The freshman Akina will play in this event for the first time. He earned an exemption by being a top 100 points leader in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
"I'm making sure every part of my game is dialed in and learning from experiences like the Utah Championship," said Akina. "It’s my first US Am and I love match play, so I want to get into match play and make a run."
Like Akina, Kim will be participating in San Francisco for his first ever US Amateur. He qualified for a spot when he finished top-6 at a US Amateur qualifier at The Country Club at DC Ranch.
"I have played in some good events, more specifically the elite series am throughout the summer," Kim said. "I just want to play my game and see how it holds up against some of the best."
This will not be the first go-around in this tournament for the senior Shelley. Last year, he missed the cut to make it into the match play portion of the tournament. Alongside Kim, he qualified for his place in the event at The Country Club at DC Ranch last month.
Monday and Tuesday will have a 18-hole stroke play battle. The lowest 64 scores will move on to match play.
Match play will begin Wednesday with the round of 64. This section of the tournament will last through Sunday.
