IRVING, Texas – BYU golfers Tyson Shelley and Whitney Banz were named recipients of the 2024-25 Dr. Gerald Lage Award, the Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday.

To be eligible, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career and maintained residence at their institution for at least one academic year. An honoree would have to earn 90 credit hours with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 or better.

Shelley and Banz are two of 394 Big 12 student-athletes to obtain this accolade. 

The senior Shelley currently holds a 3.92 GPA while having 108 credit hours earned. In 2025, Shelley’s academic recognitions now include an Academic All-District selection by College Sports Communicators (CSC) and a Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar.

Banz stands at a 4.0 GPA while having taken 94 credit hours going into her junior year. This is Banz’s first academic recognition received during her time as a Cougar.
