PROVO, Utah — After time in helmets and shoulder pads to begin camp, the BYU football team geared up in full pads for more contact during Tuesday's practice at the Zions Bank Practice Fields.

The Cougars spent a large portion of practice in team 11-on-11 scenarios with live tackling in parts, to add on to their prep for the 2025 season. BYU opens up the season against Portland State on Saturday, August 30 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Single game tickets are now on sale

Following Tuesday's practice, head coach Kalani Sitake, linebacker Siale Esera and wide receiver Chase Roberts spoke with members of the media.

Linebacker Siale Esera — August 5

Wide Receiver Chase Roberts

"Practice today was really good. We did some live work with the ones, two’s, threes, and some situational work. A lot of good things. First time in full pads, so that was good to get some tackling in. We’re pleased with how the team is working. Obviously, we made some mistakes, just need to make sure those don’t show up tomorrow in our next practice, which is the goal. I don’t expect us not to make any mistakes in practice, but expect us to fix them and make sure they’re not recurring every time. We had a couple of false starts, had a ball on the ground, and a bad snap. But other than that, I think those are very fixable items."

Is there a QB separating themselves?
"No, they’re all playing at a high level, all of them, so that's a good sign. It makes it more difficult. We asked them to make it difficult for us. We just have to keep giving them situational work like today. So even though the quarterbacks aren’t live, just seeing the decision-making process for them during tough times has been what we’re looking for."

On wide receiver depth beyond Chase Roberts
"Parker’s got a lot of experience. Jojo’s getting more, but they’re going to be fine. The talent is all there. We’re just making sure they’re learning our system. It's the new guys like Reggie and Cody, who’s been here, so I think he's adapting really well. It's just a matter of getting him here and shaking the mission legs off, and I think he's got it. He looks like the kid that ran routes in Corner Canyon, so I'm excited to see him. I thought he had a really good day today. The rest of the guys are doing great, with Chase leading the group, and I think there's a lot of talent there. They just need to get used to our system and Fesi's expectations."

What he wants to see improved now in week two"
"Yeah, we got in a lot of live work now. Last week was more of acclimating to the game with pads on. Now we’re in full gear quite a bit. I said this before, I don't know any other way to get better at football than practicing it. So today was a good amount of live work. Sure, guys got banged up, but that's okay. We just have to keep going with it."

On scrimmaging help determining the QB battle
"Everything matters and factors into it. Obviously, that scrimmage is going to have a full ref crew there, so guys should be excited for that, as we try to simulate what a game would be like. I think that'll be a good moment for them, but it all matters right now."

On Keanu Tanuvasa’s performance at camp
“He’s always been an explosive player. We’re leaning on his leadership. He’s done a great job getting the energy up. At the end of practice, the defense has been like that every practice he’s been involved in. It’s the things he does off the field that helps our team more than anything, but it helps out too that he’s very disruptive.”

On LJ Martin’s body of work and potential workload of 25 or more carries per game
“I think he can carry more than that. Last year, he was just fighting to get back to being healthy, but now you guys can see it. He’s a different guy. He’s kind of matured into his adult body. It also helps that he knows the playbook, and he’s not struggling trying to memorize stuff. In fact, he has ideas and thoughts on how we can block things. That’s when you got a guy who’s a veteran, and you can count on him. He’s becoming a leader too. In the first two years, LJ didn’t talk much. Now, he’s speaking up, and guys are listening.”

On Tanner Wall’s leadership role
“Tanner’s always been a great leader for us. Even when he was playing special teams and had a limited role on defense, he did some really good things for us as a leader. We’ll always need that leadership. We have good quality leaders on the team. I don’t think you need to be a starter to be a leader, but it helps that he’s had a significant amount of reps and starts under his belt, so we can lean on him. The key to leadership is if what they’re saying makes sense and it’s true, then we just apply to it. Humble guys will want to follow a leader in order to excel. Tanner’s always been comfortable with saying the right things at the right time.”

On the younger players that have stood out
“I’ve been impressed with all the talent that we’ve seen here. The new guys on the D-line have done a great job understanding what we want from them and becoming really disruptive. I got to give a lot of credit to those coaches and getting them ready. There’s a lot of talent there and probably not as much experienced and known players, but those guys are going to get the job done. We feel really excited about the depth at that position and how competitive those guys are.”

Other people stepping up as leaders on the offensive side
“They all are. The entire O-line is doing that. There’s a lot of guys that we can count on to be leaders for us. The O-line are the biggest guys. Everybody listens when they talk, and fortunately for us, we have a lot of experienced guys there.”

On the defensive concepts
“It’s a complicated defense, but not too complicated for us. We spend a lot of time practicing upstairs and on the field, just making sure we are dialed in and trying to keep those plays fresh in our mind.”

On how much better the defense can get this year from last year
“I think for us the sky’s the limit, I think we can go all the way this year. That’s my goal and the expectation we have as a team. Right now we’re putting together the building blocks to make that happen.”

On his goals coming out of camp and for the season
“Individually I want to be All-Big 12. And I want to be undefeated as a team. We left some out on the field last year, and I want those back. It’s not just me, it’s a team thing, a goal for everyone.”

On working with Keanu Tanuvasa
“It’s amazing, he’s a leader on and off the field, he helps speak up for us, he’s a really good leader in the whole team's eyes. It’s been really nice to learn from and play with him.”

On what he takes from Isaiah Glasker and Jack Kelly
“They’re amazing, Isaiah is freakishly athletic, he’s good, and so is Jack. Having those two guys who have played a lot on both sides of me, it helps me, and the whole team and the whole defense. Can’t wait to see what they can do this year.”

On how his dad helped him develop growing up
“My dad played here at BYU, and he's a great athlete. He let me play all the sports that I wanted to. He never made me choose a specific sport. He let me just go play all the sports that I wanted to, and let me be with my friends whether that was baseball, basketball, or football. He was supportive and he wanted to help me be the best athlete that I could be in each sport. I think that fact has helped me a lot in my athletic career, that is to be the best receiver that I could be. The different sports, basketball, with a crossover and jump shot, jump in baseball, hand eye coordination, being in the outfield, tracking the ball. So I'm grateful for his example, letting me kind of just play all those sports.”

On being a leader on this team
“I pride myself on that, and I want to be the best leader that I can possibly be. I do that first by making plays on the field, and then making sure everyone's in the right place, being confident on and off the field. I put my arm around them off the field, making sure that they're okay, their life's in balance, at least they're striving to be the best they can, and helping them out in any way I can. And I think that's, that's what a good leader does, and that's what I strive to be.”

On the current receiver group
“First off, I feel like they are great athletes, which always helps. But more importantly, they're great people, and they're very smart. They know the playbook really well, and that only took them a couple weeks to get which was very impressive, and I feel like that adds a lot of greatness to our wide receiver room when you're dialed in, when you're ready to play and when you're excited to go out and play football and make some plays. So I think we can just take it to the next level and make those contested catches, be those dogs on the field, block, and finish our assignment every play. If we do that we're going to have a deep room this year.”

On the quarterbacks
“They're all making plays, they've shown that they can run, they can scramble, that they can make every throw possible, and we're very confident in each of them. They've just taken a step forward every single practice. And I'm excited to see who will pull away.”

On the intensity at practice
“That's not something that we're lacking right now in fall camp. The first week you're out there flying around, it gets a little chippy at times, but that's offense against the defense. We don't really like each other when it comes to practice, but after the season begins, we love each other. We're a team when it comes to it.”

On if anyone on defense has impressed him
“All of them have been playing really well. Mory Bamba is really fast and quick and long, it's hard to get around him. Ethan Johnson, same thing, really all those guys. Jonathan Kabeya has been stepping it up, he's going to be a great player for us. I'm excited for each of them to play this year and to step up and make a lot of plays. Trey Alexander has been good too. You saw a little play the last couple days that he made, and he's been looking good. The strength of this offense, I feel like it's there, there's not really a weakness when it comes to our offense, and we're very solid at every point. When it comes to the run game, the pass game, we're going to have a quarterback that's going to be elusive. All the guys can run and do their thing there. So I don't really know if there's specific strength. I don't see a weakness. There's going to be plays made all over the place when it comes to screen passes, running the ball, whatever it takes we're going to be able to get.”
