COALVILLE, Utah — BYU men’s golf sits in fourth place after the opening 36 holes of The Wohali on Monday, the Cougars' first event of the season.

Host Utah (278-287–565) leads after 36 holes at 3-under with New Mexico (278-288–566) in second, just one shot back at 2-under-par. Arizona State (273-296–569), coached by former BYU Cougar Matt Thurmond, sits in third at 1-over par with the BYU Cougars (277-294–571) in fourth at 3-over-par. The Kansas State Wildcats (281-300–581) round out the top five at 13-over-par.

Simon Kwon shot 1-under-par on his first 36 holes of the season to sit in a tie for sixth with 18 holes remaining. Kwon carded ten birdies on day one en route to rounds of 68-74–142.

Peter Kim sits one shot behind Kwon at even par through two rounds after recording seven birdies on the day. Kim posted scores of 70-72–142 to hold a share of eighth.

Preseason Third Team All-American Kihei Akina opened his collegiate career with rounds of 70-74–144 to grab a share of 16th place after the opening day. The true freshman made eight birdies on day one, but also carded two doubles to bring his 36-hole total to 2-over-par.

Oklahoma State transfer Parker Bunn turned in scores of 73-74–147 in his first start as a BYU Cougar. Bunn sits at 5-over through 36 holes after recording six birdies on day one. The redshirt freshman was the only Cougar to avoid a double bogey or worse on the opening day in Coalville.

Jackson Mauss (69-79–148) sits in a tie for 38th after posting a 6-over-par total on day one. The sophomore carded a 2-under par 69 in round one before turning in a 79 in round two with just a lone birdie.
