IRVING, Texas — BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier was today named Big 12 Freshman of the Week for his performance versus Portland State on Saturday.

Bachmeier, the first true-freshman quarterback to ever to start a season-opener for BYU, completed 7 of 11 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also had five carries for 32 yards and two rushing touchdowns to lead BYU to a 69-0 win over PSU.

The 6-2, 220-pound quarterback from Murrieta, California, played just two quarters, leading BYU to 49 first-half points, tying the second-highest total in school history. Bachmeier also became the first FBS player since Antwaan Randle El of Indiana in 1998 to have at least three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in his debut.

Bachmeier was a four-star high school recruit by Rivals and was ranked as high as the No. 11 quarterback in the nation by ESPN. While at Murrieta Valley High School, he totaled 6,810 passing yards to go with 59 touchdowns, 1,724 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Bachmeier earned four varsity letters in football, alongside lettering in both baseball and basketball.

After enrolling at Stanford for 2025 spring football practices, Bachmeier transferred to BYU this summer along with his brother, Tiger, who played two seasons for the Cardinal.

BYU football will host Stanford this Saturday, Sept. 6 at 8:15 p.m. MDT at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN with Mark Jones, Roddy Jones and Quint Kessenich on the call.
