For the fourth time in six weeks, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, this time for his performance in the Cougars’ 33-27 double-overtime win at Arizona on Saturday.

IRVING, Texas — BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Cougars’ 33-27 win at Arizona on Saturday. It’s the fourth time in six weeks that Bachmeier has received the honor.

The 6-2, 230-pound quarterback from Murrieta, California, completed 12 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 89 yards and two more scores to lead then No. 18 ranked BYU to a double-overtime win at Arizona. His first rushing touchdown tied the game with just 19 seconds left in regulation and his second score proved to be the game winner in the second overtime.

Through six games, Bachmeier has completed 91 of 144 passes (63.2-percent) for 1,220 yards and eight touchdowns. The true freshman is averaging 203.3 yards per game passing, with an efficiency rating of 148.5. In addition, Bachmeier is second on the team in rushing, with 71 carries for 295 yards (4.2-yard average) and seven additional touchdowns.

Against Portland State on Aug. 30, Bachmeier became the first true freshman quarterback ever to start a season opener for BYU.

Bachmeier was a four-star high school recruit by Rivals and was ranked as high as the No. 11 quarterback in the nation by ESPN. While at Murrieta Valley High School, he totaled 6,810 passing yards to go with 59 touchdowns, 1,724 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Bachmeier earned four varsity letters in football, alongside lettering in both baseball and basketball.

After enrolling at Stanford for 2025 spring football practices, Bachmeier transferred to BYU this summer along with his brother, Tiger, who played two seasons for the Cardinal.

No. 14/15 ranked BYU will host No. 22/23 ranked Utah in the Cougars’ annual homecoming game slated for Saturday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. MDT on FOX. The game features the first ranked meeting between the two teams since 2009.
