Daniel Island, S.C. — BYU men’s golf recorded a 7-over 295 on Monday and sits in a tie for 14th after round one of The Bryson Invitational at Daniel Island Club.
“This was a rough day for our team,” said director of golf Todd Miller. “Our iron play was uncharacteristically poor and our putting wasn’t much better.”
Vanderbilt leads the 15-team field with a 10-under 278 first-round score at the 7,295-yard course. The Commodores made the most birdies and eagles on the day. Two strokes behind Vanderbilt are Wake Forest and Kansas, who share second at 8-under par. Duke sits in fourth with a 7-under opening day, followed by Wisconsin at 5-under to close out the top five.
Freshman Kihei Akina produced the best score on the team. Akina recorded an even-par 72, finishing tied for 30th after day one.
Tyson Shelley and Simon Kwon are tied for 46th, with both Shelley and Kwon making two birdies on their way to a 2-over 74 in round one.
Junior Angus Klintworth recorded a 3-over 75 and shares a tie for 60th after day one. Klintworth is making his first start of the season in South Carolina this week.
Peter Kim posted a 7-over 79 to put himself in 80th with 36 holes to play.
“Fortunately, we have two more rounds,” said Miller. “I know this team will bounce back and get some momentum in the second round tomorrow.”
