PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s soccer (8-4-3, 3-3-2 Big 12) tied Colorado 2-2 Monday night at South Field.
Junior Ellie Walbruch secured BYU's first goal of the night, her 10th of the season. True freshman Mia Goettsche added her fourth goal of the season to secure the draw.
Sophomore midfielder Mika Krommehoek tallied her fourth goal of the season and now has assists in back-to-back games. Sophomore Lucy Kesler recorded her second assist of the season.
Chelsea Peterson, a transfer from Utah, saw her first minutes of the season when keeper Paiton Collins came out with an injury in the 61st minute.
“We’re really fortunate — we’ve got a great goalkeeper unit," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "Sarah Mathis is someone we’re trying to redshirt at this point in the season, so Chelsea got the nod. She’s done really well in practice, and she knew she’d probably get the call if anything happened to Paiton.”
BYU outshot the Buffs 23-19 on the night, notching nine shots on frame compared to Colorado's eight. The Cougars forced Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes to make seven saves in the match.
First Half
BYU opened the game fast with a shot on goal by Walbruch in the second minute that was saved by a dive from the keeper.
Colorado fired right back having its own shot in the sixth minute on target but saved by Collins.
In the 16th minute, Kesler won the ball and passed it up the spine of the field to Krommenoek who dribbled it from midfield into the 18-yard box. She threaded the needle between two defenders to find Walbruch who buried it in the corner of the net to put BYU up, 1-0. This was Walbruch's sixth goal in four games.
The Buffs responded by having two shots of their own, one saved by Collins and the other blocked by Izzi Stratton.
The Buffs took the lead in the 23rd minute scoring back-to-back goals in the same minute to make it 2-1.
The Cougars turned the momentum around in the 28th minute after a couple of substitutions. Camryn Jorgensen passed it over to Goettsche who fired off a shot from beyond the 18 to find the equalizer for the Cougs.
At the break, the Cougs and Buffs were dead even across the board — two goals, 11 shots, five on frame, three saves and two corners each.
Second Half
The Cougars started the half with five shots in the first ten minutes, all coming up empty.
In the 66th minute, Peterson made a diving save on a shot by Colorado, the first of her BYU career.
Peterson’s number was called again in the 70th minute when she fully extended her body to punch the ball over the net to keep the Buffs at bay.
In the 72nd minute the Buff’s keeper was assessed a yellow card after impeding a goal-scoring opportunity.
The Cougs kept on the pressure and recorded three shots in the 81st and 82nd minutes.
In the final four minutes of the match, Walbruch got two one-on-one opportunities with the goalie but was called for offsides both times, and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
