CARMEL, Calif. — BYU men’s golf (275-273-287–835) posted a 1-under-par final round on Tuesday to take home The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate title with a 29-under-par score at Santa Lucia Preserve.

“All the guys had some really solid play this week,” said head coach Bruce Brockbank.

With the win at Santa Lucia Preserve, the Cougars have now claimed victory in two out of five events played this season. Three BYU golfers placed in the top five. In addition, the team led the field in par-4 scoring and made birdies on their way to the team title.

“I’m proud of the guys for hanging in there today,” Director of Golf Todd Miller added. “When we met in the morning and reviewed the hole locations, we knew it would play tougher in the third round.”

Tyson Shelley (69-68-68–205) posted a 4-under closing round to capture third place, his best finish of the season. This ties Shelley’s highest finish in his BYU career since taking third at the 2022 USF Intercollegiate. The Salt Lake native tied for his best 54-hole score of his career with an 11-under 205 which he notched at the 58th Ping Cougar Classic in 2023.

“Just wanted to play my golf,” said Shelley. “The course set up well for me and during the practice round, I found my confidence and was able to hit the shots I needed for the tournament. I hit my iron shots really well the past two days. This course was an approach shot demanding course, and I was able to hit my approach shots in good positions to score.”

“I’m excited for Tyson,” said Miller. “He has a way of stepping up when we need him the most, and he did it again today.”

“The big reason we won this week is the play of Tyson Shelley,” said Brockbank. “So impressed by the adjustments he made. The harder the course played the better he played.”

Kihei Akina (69-68-71–208) and Simon Kwon (68-66-74–208) ended the event tied for fifth at 8-under par. After his 1-under-par day, Akina notched his first career top-five finish and his lowest career 54-hole score. This marks Kwon’s third top-five finish this season which raised his top-five counter to five in his Cougar tenure.

"I hit the ball very well and gave myself a lot of looks," said Akina. "Struggled on the greens in trying to make putts but it was a great team win. The boys stepped up."

Jackson Mauss (69-74-74–217) carded a 2-over-par third round to finish in 33rd at 1-over par.

Peter Kim (70-71-77–218) tied for 36th after recording a 5-over-par final round.

Parker Bunn (69-71-78–218) posted a 6-over on the day to tie Kim for 36th while participating as an individual.

BYU has now wrapped up the fall portion of its 2025-26 season. After a three-month break, the Cougars will begin their winter season with the Arizona N.I.T. in Tucson, Arizona on Jan. 26-27.
