PROVO, Utah — BYU received a No. 12 ranking the second release of the 2025 College Football Playoff rankings revealed Tuesday by the CFP selection committee.
Coming off their only defeat of the season at top-10 Texas Tech, the Cougars (8-1) fell five spots from No. 7 to No. 12 while the Red Raiders improved two places from No. 8 to No. 6 in this week's CFP rankings. Last year during the first year of the 12-team playoff, the Cougars were ranked in all six CFP rankings released while earning rankings of No. 9, No. 6, No. 14, No. 19, No. 18 and No. 17.
The top five teams remained from last week with Ohio State (9-0) at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Indiana (10-0), No. 3 Texas A&M (9-0), No. 4 Alabama (8-1) and No. 5 Georgia (8-1). After Texas Tech at No. 6, Ole Miss (9-1) is down one spot to No. 7, followed by No. 8 Oregon (8-1), No. 9 Notre Dame (7-2), No. 10 Texas (7-2) and No. 11 Oklahoma (7-2)—all up one spot in the rankings.
After Texas Tech at No. 6 and BYU at No. 12, Utah (7-2) is the third Big 12 team in the rankings, staying at No. 13, while Cincinnati (7-2) entered the CFP this week at No. 25 to give the conference four teams overall in the top 25.
The rest of the top 25 includes No. 14 Vanderbilt (8-2), No. 15 Miami (7-2), No. 16 Georgia Tech (9-1), No. 17 USC (7-2), No. 18 Michigan (7-2), No. 19 Virginia (8-2), No. 20 Louisville (7-2), No. 21 Iowa (6-3), No. 22 Pittsburgh (8-2), No. 23 Tennessee (6-3) and No. 24 South Florida, who also entering the rankings this week with Cincinnati. Teams falling out of the CFP rankings were Missouri (6-3) and Washington (6-3).
BYU also received a No. 12 ranking in both The Associated Press Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll released on Sunday.

This week No. 12 BYU hosts TCU (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo for an 8:15 kickoff on ESPN. The Horned Frogs will be BYU's fifth home opponent this season. The Cougars have previously earned home victories this year in LaVell Edwards Stadium over Portland State (69-0), Stanford (27-3), West Virginia (38-24) and over No. 13 Utah (24-21). BYU is 4-1 on the road with wins at East Carolina (34-13), Colorado (24-21), Arizona (33-27 2OT) and Iowa State (41-27) before Saturday's loss at now No. 6 Texas Tech (29-7).
