BYU and Utah State meet in First Round of NCAA Tournament

The Cougars are set to host in-state foe Utah State on South Field for the second time this season Friday night.

PROVO,  Utah – Earning a No. 5 seed, BYU women’s soccer will host the Utah State Aggies at South Field Friday evening for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY. BYU will make its eighth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance against Utah State Friday evening. Under the direction of head coach Jennifer Rockwood, BYU has now earned a spot in the NCAA tournament 26 times in 31 years. The Cougars have been to nine Sweet Sixteens, five Elite Eights, one College Cup semifinals (2023) and one College Cup finals (2021). Last year, the Cougars earned a No. 7 seed and hosted Santa Clara in the first round, falling 1-0 on South Field.

THE COUGARS. BYU (11-6-4, 4-5-2 Big 12) won its first-ever Big 12 Tournament title, edging out No. 5 TCU, No. 23 Baylor and Kansas. The Cougars are the first team in Big 12 history to come into the tournament as the No. 8 seed and take home the trophy. Ellie Walbruch led her team with five goals, including back-to-back braces against TCU and Baylor. She earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player, leading the tournament in goals. Goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson earned Most Outstanding Defensive Player after a tournament-high 17 saves and two shutouts. Lucy Kesler and Izzi Stratton joined Walbruch and Peterson on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.

THE AGGIES. Utah State (10-6-6, 5-2-3 MWC) won its third-straight Mountain West Tournament title, defeating Boise State in penalty kicks Saturday night. Five Aggies earned all-conference recognition, with three earning spots on the All-MW First Team and two on the second team. This will be Utah State’s fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

COUGARS VS. AGGIES. BYU and Utah State faced earlier this season when the Aggies traveled to Provo. The Cougars earned the 2-0 shutout victory, courtesy of freshman Mia Goettsche’s first career brace. BYU and Utah State have played 19 times in program history, and the Cougars hold the series lead 15-3-1.
