Despite a career-high 28 kills from Suli Davis and Claire Little Chambers' third-straight double-double, BYU came up short in the loss at Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY — No. 23 BYU women’s volleyball lost a five-set match at Utah (25-17, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 12-15) in the Huntsman Center on Friday night.

The Cougars (18-8, 6-8 Big 12) out-hit the Utes .299 to .268 in the match with two more kills (68-66), but were out-blocked by Utah (14-8) and had four fewer aces (7-3).

BYU had three hitters finish in double figures, led by Suli Davis’ career-high 28 kills. Claire Little Chambers (18 kills, 11 digs) posted her third-straight double-double and Brielle Kemavor added 11 kills.

Alex Bower finished with 53 assists. Lulu Uluave had 15 digs and Elli Mortensen had 10. Davis was a dig shy of a double-double of her own.

Set 1
BYU raced out to a 5-0 lead on a pair of Davis kills, forcing an early Utah timeout. Two more kills from Davis and a pair by Little Chambers then had the Cougars leading by 10 at 13-3.

Callahan got in on the action, as did Bower with a dump kill before Bower and Brielle Kemavor combined for a double block. Kemavor scored on quick hitter, and Davis closed things out with a kill, 25-17.

Set 2
Kemavor added three kills while Davis and Little Chambers had two as the second set went back-and-forth. Callahan recorded a kill and a solo stuff, but BYU took a timeout trailing 12-9.

Davis and Little Chambers kept it tight, and a Kemavor-Callahan double block pulling the Cougars within one. The Utes answered with four in a row, spanning BYU’s second timeout, to make it 19-14. The Cougars responded with a 3-0 run, and Utah took a timeout.

Uluave and Bower both dropped in aces, giving the Cougars the lead. A Little Chambers tip kill put BYU at set point, where Davis put down an ace to complete a five-point comeback and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, 25-22.

Set 3
Two 3-0 runs by Utah forced a Cougar timeout at 8-4. BYU got two more kills from Davis and benefited from a pair of Ute service errors, but took its second timeout trailing 15-10.

Then down 20-13, a 5-0 Cougar run that featured two Davis kills, another by Little Chambers and forced a Utah timeout had BYU within two, 20-18.

Davis scored through the block, and the Little Chambers went cross-court to make it 22-21, but the Utes took the final three points of the set to make it 2-1 in the match, 25-21.

Set 4
BYU opened the fourth frame with a Kemavor-Bower double block and two Bower dump kills as the two teams traded points early. Trailing 11-9, a 5-0 run that included a Mortensen free-ball kill and consecutive OPKs from Elena Wallace and Davis put the Cougars in front, 14-11.

After BYU led 15-13 at the media timeout, two-straight Utah errors forced a Ute timeout. Trading points from there, a Kemavor-Callahan double block made it 20-18, but the Cougars called their first timeout at 20-20.

Little Chambers scored out of the timeout, but Utah closed the set on a 5-0 run, spanning BYU’s second timeout, to even the match at 2-2, 25-21.

Set 5
The Cougars got down 2-0 and were playing catch-up through the media timeout, where they trailed 8-5. After a Ute service error, BYU hit into consecutive blocks and took a timeout down 10-6.

Little Chambers scored through the block, but two Utah kills made it 12-7, where the Cougars called their second timeout. Kemavor and Little Chambers each had kills, the Cougars’ first consecutive points in the set, but the Utes earned match point a play later.

BYU fought it off twice on a Bower-Kemavor double block and a Kemavor kill, forcing a Utah timeout. The Cougars fought off match point one more time, but a Ute kill off the block sealed the reverse sweep, 15-12.
