PALO ALTO, Calif. – After surviving its second penalty-kick shootout of the tournament against UCLA on Friday night, the BYU women’s soccer team will face top-seeded Stanford in a Sweet 16 showdown Monday.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY. After back-to-back penalty kick shootouts to open the 2025 NCAA Tournament, Monday will be BYU’s 10th Sweet 16 appearance. The Cougars and the Cardinal have faced seven times in the tournament, with Stanford holding a 4-2-1 series record. Under the direction of head coach Jennifer Rockwood, BYU has now earned a spot in the NCAA tournament 26 times in 31 years. The Cougars have been to five Elite Eights, one College Cup semifinals (2023) and one College Cup finals (2021). 

THE COUGARS. No. 5 seed BYU (11-6-6, 4-5-2 Big 12) faced UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night. After 110 minutes of play, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and went to penalty kicks.The Cougars advanced on penalty kicks, 4-2, after two huge stops by goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson and perfect shooting from all four BYU kick takers. BYU’s goal in regulation was a header by Mattyn Summers-Oviatt, assisted by Mika Krommenhoek and Halle Dixon.   

THE CARDINAL. No. 1 seed Stanford (18-1-2, 9-0-1 ACC) faced Alabama in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night, beating the Crimson Tide 7-3. The Cardinal scored four second-half goals to secure the victory. Stanford had 40 shots in the match, with 22 shots on frame and 22 corner kicks. The Cardinal held the Crimson Tide to just five shots and no corner kicks.

COUGARS VS. THE CARDINAL. The Cougars and the Cardinal have competed 10 times in program history, with Stanford holding the overall series record 6-3-1. BYU and Stanford have faced seven times in the NCAA Tournament, with The Cardinal holding a 4-2-1 tournament series record. The teams last faced off in the 2023 Final Four, and Stanford beat BYU 2-0.
