PROVO, Utah — BYU (8-0) was ranked No. 7 in the first release of the 2025 College Football Playoff rankings revealed Tuesday by the CFP selection committee.
The ranking is the second-highest CFP ranking earned by the Cougars during the CFP era. Last year during the first year of the 12-team playoff, the Cougars were ranked in all six CFP rankings released while earning rankings of No. 9, No. 6, No. 14, No. 19, No. 18 and No. 17.
Now, in the second season of the 12-team playoff format and 12th year overall of the CFP playoff, BYU is initially projected as the No. 7 seed in this week's look at the potential 2025 playoff bracket.
Ohio State (8-0) is ranked No. 1, followed by No. 2 Indiana (9-0), No. 3 Texas A&M (8-0) and No. 4 Alabama (7-1) as the top four seeds who would receive a bye in the opening round. Georgia (7-1) is ranked No. 5, followed by No. 6 Ole MIss (8-1), No. 7 BYU (8-0), No. 8 Texas Tech (8-1), No. 9 Oregon (7-1) and No. 10 Notre Dame (6-2). Texas (7-2) and Oklahoma (7-2) are next at No. 11 and No. 12, respectively, with Utah (7-2) being the third Big 12 team in the rankings at No. 13.
The rest of the top 25 includes Virginia (8-1) at No. 14, followed by Louisville (7-1), Vanderbilt (7-2), Georgia Tech (8-1), Miami (6-2), USC (6-2), Iowa (6-2), Michigan (7-2), Missouri (6-2), Washington (6-2), Pittsburgh (7-2) and Tennessee (6-3).
BYU received a No. 8 ranking in both The Associated Press Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll released on Sunday.
Top-10 College GameDay Matchup
ESPN College GameDay is headed to Lubbock, Texas, this week to highlight the Big 12's top-10 matchup between No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Texas Tech on Saturday. It is the first time BYU will face a top-10 team while being ranked in the top-10. The Cougars will be playing their fifth away game of the season when they take on the Red Raiders at Jones AT&T Stadium in an 11 a.m. CT kick nationally televised on ABC. This year the Cougars have road victories at East Carolina (34-13), Colorado (24-21), Arizona (33-27 2OT) and Iowa State (41-27) along with home wins over Portland State (69-0), Stanford (27-3), West Virginia (38-24) and then No. 23/22 Utah (24-21).
