IRVING, Texas — BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been named Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Cougars’ 41-21 decisive win over UCF on Saturday. It’s the seventh week during the 2025 season that Bachmeier has received the honor.
The 6-2, 230-pound true freshman quarterback from Murrieta, California, delivered one of his most efficient outings of the season, completing 21-of-25 passes for 289 yards, no interceptions and one touchdown in the win. With BYU leading 17-14 at halftime, Bachmeier orchestrated a pair of 75-yard touchdown drives early in the third quarter to give the Cougars a 31-14 lead. His 84-percent completion percentage for the game set a new career high.
As a true freshman, Bachmeier helped guide the Cougars to an 11-1 regular season record and a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Dallas on Saturday, Dec. 6.
During 12 regular-season games, Bachmeier completed 208-of-322 passes (65 percent) for 2,593 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He averaged 216.1 yards per game passing, with an efficiency rating of 144.1. In addition, Bachmeier is second on the team in rushing, with 137 carries for 529 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and an average of 44.1 yards per game.
On Nov. 17, the Davey O’Brien Foundation named Bachmeier one of 20 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award. He has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list twice during the 2025 season.
The Cougars conclude the regular season with an 11-1 overall record, undefeated at home, and will now prepare to face No. 5 Texas Tech on Dec. 6 in the Big 12 Conference Championship game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
