Women's Cross Country 2025 Season Review

The Cougars’ season was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the NCAA National Championship and their third-straight Big 12 title.

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s cross country team wrapped up its season with its third straight Big 12 title, a runner-up finish at the NCAA National Championship and three regular season meet wins.

Head coach Diljeet Taylor led the Cougars to their 10th straight national championship appearance, where Hedengren’s second-place finish helped the team take runner-up behind NC State. BYU totaled 130 points, a 17-point improvement from last year’s title team, and finished 16 points behind the Wolfpack’s 116. The Cougars sat in third place through the first 4,000-meters before surging to second over the final 2000m, finishing 23 points ahead of third-place Oregon.

Hedengren and Riley Chamberlain led BYU in the title race with their second and fourth place finishes, respectively, to earn All-America honors. Nelah Roberts, Taylor Rohatinsky and Taylor Lovell rounded out the Cougars’ top five.

The Cougars earned an automatic spot to the national championships at the NCAA Mountain Regional on Nov. 14 in Salt Lake City at the Regional Athletic Complex. The team finished second with 47 points behind strong performances from Hedengren and Chamberlain. All five of BYU’s top scorers earned All-Mountain Region honors: Hedengren, Chamberlain, Rohatinsky, Alder and Lexi Goff-Thompson. Zariel Macchia also received the honor.

BYU won its third straight Big 12 title on Halloween at the Jayhawks’ Rim Rock Farm with 38 points. Hedengren shattered the Big 12 Championship 6,000-meter record by more than 30 seconds with her 18:29.60, setting a personal best in the process. Chamberlain finished third in 19:15.20, just over a second behind the runner-up.

Roberts, Lovell and Macchia rounded out the Cougars’ top five, placing 10th, 11th and 13th, respectively.

At the end of the season, Taylor was named the Mountain Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year and the Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Hedengren earned Mountain Region Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Newcomer of the Year and Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year honors.
