BATON ROUGE, Louisiana — BYU offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Aaron Roderick and director of player personnel Justin Anderson were honored this week by FootballScoop as national finalist for the 2025 on-field and off-field Coach of the Year awards, presented by Teamworks.
Now in its 18th year, the FootballScoop Coach of the Year program is the only college football awards to honor excellence on field across all position groups, as well as off-field personnel who play an important role in the success of the school's football program.
RODERICK was named one of five finalists for the FootballScoop Quarterback Coach of the Year. BYU’s offensive coordinator since 2021, Roderick has helped guide the No. 11 ranked Cougars to an 11-1 record and a trip to the Big 12 Championship game in Dallas on Saturday, Dec. 6. He is also a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.
As the quarterbacks coach, Roderick, along with assistant quarterbacks coach Matt Mitchell, has tutored true freshman Bear Bachmeier to the best start of any freshman quarterback in BYU history. The 6-2, 230-pound true freshman quarterback from Murrieta, California, finished the regular season completing 208-of-322 passes (65 percent) for 2,593 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He averaged 216.1 yards per game passing, with an efficiency rating of 144.1. In addition, Bachmeier is second on the team in rushing, with 137 carries for 529 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and an average of 44.1 yards per game.
On Dec. 4, Bachmeier was honored as the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year. He was also a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, was named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list twice during the season and was named Big 12 Freshman Player of the Week seven times.
ANDERSON, a finalist for the FootballScoop Player Personnel award joined the BYU football program as the director of player personnel in 2022. Anderson manages the BYU football roster for all prospective and current student-athletes, helping to recruit highly rated national talent while ensuring each position group is filled. In addition, he oversees the on-boarding and off-boarding process for members of the official roster.
On Wednesday, Justin helped BYU football land the highest rated signing class in program history. The 19 recruits who signed this week have an average composite rating of 88.93 via 247Sports, the highest average score of any BYU football recruiting class. As a group it represents the top-ranked recruiting class in school history at No. 20 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12.
The 2025 BYU signing class included eight recruits from the state of Utah, with two each from California and Texas, along with signees from Arizona, Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Idaho, Nevada and Oregon. The class includes 10 offensive players and nine on defense.
Headlining the class is quarterback Ryder Lyons, one of the highest-rated recruits in the history of the program with a composite score of 98.18. He was the 2024 California Gatorade Player of the Year and No. 35 on ESPN’s Top 300 recruits.
Finalist for the FootballScoop Coach of the Year awards were chosen by their peers and former award winners from among thousands of coaches across the 729 football-playing institutions in the NCAA and NAIA.
