NEW ORLEANS – Jane Hedengren was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Monday.
Hedengren earned the award after her record-breaking performance at last weekend’s Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, where she won the 5,000-meter invite. The Provo, Utah, product became the first collegiate woman to break 14:50, clocking 14:44.79 to win by more than 14 seconds. Her time broke Alabama’s Doris Lemngole’s previous record by nearly eight seconds and ranks as the 10th-fastest 5,000 by an American and the 11th-fastest indoor 5,000 in world history.
The freshman is the first USTFCCCA track and field awardee of the season. It marks her third recognition this year, including during cross country season.
